In this basilica stands the holy house of Mother Mary. According to legend, angels flew it from Nazareth to Loreto via Dalmatia after the holy land was lost to the Muslims.

The Holy House in Loreto was initially built with a small church. In 1468, with the participation of the most important Italian architects and artists, the construction of today's cross-shaped domed basilica began in post-Gothic and Renaissance styles. Pope Paul II, who is said to have been miraculously healed as a cardinal in Loreto in 1464, personally supported the construction. The church was completed with the representative facade in 1587.
