"The polar explorer" is a coastal work by Freddy Cappon, a native of Nieuwpoort. He was commissioned by the city council to make the sculpture on the occasion of the departure of polar explorer and ex-Nieuwpoortenaar Dixie Dansercoer (1962-2021) on an expedition in 2007. The statue above all symbolizes the solitude and vastness of the universe. The imaginary road that Dixie traverses with his skis, alone with his thoughts and feelings, extends to the gates of heaven. The sculpture is a dukdalf, ode to Nieuwpoort. The pillars are 6 meters high, the circular arcs form the North and South Poles."
