Three countries, one river: the Inn connects Switzerland, Austria and Germany. It rises in the Swiss Engadine, flows through parts of Austria and Bavaria, and flows into the Danube near Passau. The Austrian-German state border runs in the middle of the river between Kufstein and Erl. The Inn flows further north to Rosenheim, where the Mangfall flows into it. As the river progresses, it changes direction more and more to the east. Below Marktl, the Salzach flows into the Inn as the most important tributary. From here the river marks the state border again.

The name Inn is derived from the Celtic words en and enios, which freely translated mean water. In a document from the year 1338 the river is registered with the name water. The first written mention comes from the years 105 to 109 by Tacitus
