Alp Astras is the highest managed hut in Val S-charl. Here you can get simple snacks and of course fresh milk and delicious Alpine cheese.
A very nice single trail begins from the hut up to the Pass da Costainas. Opposite the hut, rising from the valley floor to 2,300 meters, is the God Tamangur, the highest pine forest (Rhaeto-Romanic for pine) in the Alps. Some of the very robust conifers are up to 700 years old.
It is not possible to spend the night in the hut.

Better to stop in S'charl or on the other side of the pass. Quite unfriendly service, none of five passengers was satisfied with the coffee. We also had a breakdown (total brake failure) and wanted to ask for help / tools, as there is no cell phone network available up here. We were harshly turned away and of the two men, the cheese makers, were not even allowed to speak to one. We were only offered to use the phone rather reluctantly. But if you don't know (or can google) who to call, that's no use ....
