There is a path through the restricted area, but according to the signs it is forbidden to drive through
have to drive around the long way ... should.

I'm doing an update here, the path can still be driven. I've seen cyclists and pedestrians there several times now and have driven through it a few times myself. Nobody seems to say anything against it.
The path quickly becomes muddy when wet and you should then watch out for the smooth tree roots. The tires slide sideways quickly and that can be uncomfortable.
