The monastery of Chiaravalle, founded in 1136, represents one of the first Cistercian settlements in Italy. Originating from Clairvaux in Burgundy, it followed the Cistercian tradition with influences from Bernard of Clairvaux. The structure reflects typical Cistercian characteristics, with the presbytery at a straight end and square chapels on the sides. The monastic community actively contributed to the reclamation of the Po Valley, but in 1248 it was almost totally destroyed by the imperial troops.

One of the first monasteries in Italy. A highlight of the day's stage of the Via Francigena. Nice pilgrim shop and WC inside the monastery.
