Cykling
1,114 meters long, paved, and perfectly straight with a slight incline – this section is part of the new cycle path connecting Haiger and Breitscheid. The tunnel is illuminated, with the lights switching on segment by segment as you enter.
Routing note: The former railway line has been converted into a cycle path from Medenbach station onwards. The remaining section of track will reliably guide you along the way.

Routing note: Komoot always routes the route from the tunnel to Breitscheid via the main road because the old railway track in the area of the Cartonia company is apparently privately owned. However, the municipality of Breitscheid has recently covered the old railway line with ballast, so you only need to follow the direction of the remaining tracks.
The lighting is excellent.
Dogs should definitely be kept on a leash in the tunnel; despite the lighting, it's difficult to see a dog.
It is still advisable to carry a light so that you can be seen.

That's how it used to be: (Transit not necessarily recommended.
Pretty creepy but interesting. If you are planning your tour through this tunnel, you should consider that 1. there is only loose gravel here and it is not easy to drive and 2. it has no lighting.)
Addendum 2022: Tunnel is now nicely paved, well lit and highly recommended 👍🏼
