Tinz Castle was built between 1745 and 1748 on the site of a medieval moated castle in the Baroque style in the Tinz district of Gera.
The moats and bridge structures geometrically surrounding the castle were filled with slag in 1975. The castle often served as a military hospital in times of war, but also as an educational center (1920 socialist folk high school) or a judicial center (1996-2010). The renovation of the castle and its grounds began in July 2013. The building is currently used as part of the Tinz campus by the Gera-Eisenach Cooperative State University.
