In 1654, a central chapel of grace, with a portal-like view, was built in the shape of a hexagonal dome. The Chapel of Mercy in Scherpenheuvel served as a model. The Bishop of Roermond consecrated the altar in 1663.

The Gnadenkapelle on Kapellenplatz is the destination of all Kevelaer pilgrims. The “Consolatrix Afflictorum” is located in the hexagonal dome.
As early as 1642, Hendrick Busman placed the picture in a wayside shrine at precisely this point. It has remained unchanged in its place to this day. Today's Chapel of Grace was built around the original wayside shrine in 1654 so that believers can continue to make pilgrimages very close to the picture.

The chapel building from 1654 did not change anything at the place of origin of the image of grace. It is still in the place where it was used in 1642.
