The Loisach, which has its source in the municipality of Biberwier in Tyrol, still has long stretches of sections that are valuable from a nature conservation perspective. The upper reaches (with the exception of the Leermoos valley basin) and the stretch in the area of the Loisach-Kochelsee moors are particularly important from a nature conservation perspective. In the middle and lower reaches (just before the confluence with the Kochelsee to the confluence with the Isar), numerous bank structures disrupt the natural connection between the water and the floodplain.
