The town was founded in Roman times. Today, Pontebba is struggling with a declining population. Nevertheless, it is worth stopping here for cyclists on the Alpe-Adria cycle path. Among other things, you can see the three-aisled, Gothic parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore with a carved winged altar from 1517. The Palazzo Municipale (the town hall built in 1923) has a staircase worth seeing. And last but not least, the church of San Giovanni Battista.

Since June 30, 2020, 3 new sections around Pontebba of the Alpe-Adria cycle path have been opened.

The name derives from the Italian word Ponte (to German: bridge). It can also be assumed that originally the Latin expression pons viae (German: bridge of the street) or ad pontem viae (German: to the bridge of the road) stood godfather. Already in old documents the names Pontevia, Pontieba, Ponteva and even Pontaiba can be read for this piece of land.
