It covers an area of about 15,000 ha (as of 2000) and extends in the southeast of Nuremberg between the river Rednitz in the west and the city Altdorf and the municipality Leinburg in the east. The southern border is the river Schwarzach.
The name comes from St. Lawrence, the main church of the same name and south of the Pegnitz Nuremberg district.
South of the Schwarzach, the so-called "Southern Reichswald", which reaches as far as the Rothsee, only recently joined.
