On the mountain Randa there is not only the well-known monastery Cura on the summit, but altogether three monasteries, distributed on the slope. The middle one is the Ermita de Sant Honorat, which offers a great view and a lovely courtyard, as well as a picnic area with seating and table.

The small church of the monastery of Sant Honorat is open to the public.
In contrast to the Santuari de Cura at the summit or the spectacular Santuari de Nostra Senyora de Gràcia just below, it's quite a tranquil place - we didn't meet anyone here.
Due to the parking lot in front of it, this place would also be conceivable as an alternative starting point for a Randa tour.

What are the opening hours for the Ermita de Sant Honorat and its church?

While the small church of the Ermita de Sant Honorat is generally open to the public, the hermitage itself is a monastic retreat, and other areas may not always be accessible to unregistered visitors. There are no fixed public opening hours for the entire complex, but the church is typically open during daylight hours for prayer and contemplation. It's known for being a tranquil place, often uncrowded.

Is there public transport available to reach Ermita de Sant Honorat?

Direct public transport to Ermita de Sant Honorat is limited. The hermitage is situated on the southern slopes of Puig de Randa and is best reached via a small serpentine road (Ma-5018) from the village of Randa. Most visitors arrive by car, bicycle, or on foot as part of a hike. Check local bus schedules to Randa village, but expect to walk or cycle the remaining ascent.

Are there specific hiking trails that lead directly to Ermita de Sant Honorat?

Yes, Ermita de Sant Honorat is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists ascending Puig de Randa. While there isn't one single 'official' trail, numerous routes lead to and from the hermitage, often connecting it with the village of Randa below and the Santuari de Cura at the summit. These routes vary in length and difficulty, offering options for different fitness levels. Many consider it a calming midpoint on a longer journey up the mountain.

What is the terrain like for hiking to Ermita de Sant Honorat, and what level of difficulty can I expect?

The terrain leading to Ermita de Sant Honorat is generally a paved, serpentine road (Ma-5018) if approaching by vehicle or bicycle. For hikers, there are also paths and trails that can be rocky and uneven in places, typical of mountain terrain. The highlight is categorized as intermediate difficulty, primarily due to the continuous uphill climb. Comfortable footwear is highly recommended.

Are there any specific landmarks or natural features to look out for at Ermita de Sant Honorat besides the hermitage itself?

Beyond the historic hermitage, visitors can enjoy a lovely courtyard shaded by ancient oaks, which also serves as a picnic area. The site offers spectacular panoramic views of the southern part of Mallorca, including the plains of Llucmajor and Campos, and on clear days, even the island of Cabrera. Inside the chapel, look for the Gothic inscription from 1397 and the effigy of Ramon Llull on one of the gateways.

Is Ermita de Sant Honorat suitable for families with children or dog-friendly?

Ermita de Sant Honorat can be suitable for families, especially those who enjoy walking or cycling. The picnic area in the oak-shaded courtyard is a pleasant spot for a break. For dogs, the outdoor areas and trails are generally dog-friendly, but always ensure your dog is on a leash and that you clean up after them. Access inside the church or other monastic buildings might be restricted for pets.

What is the best time of year to visit Ermita de Sant Honorat to avoid crowds or for specific activities?

The hermitage is known for its tranquility and rarely feels crowded compared to other sites. However, for hiking and cycling, the milder weather of spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) is ideal, offering pleasant temperatures and lush scenery. Summer can be very hot, making early mornings or late afternoons preferable. Winter visits are also possible, offering crisp views, but check weather conditions for potential chill.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options directly at or very near Ermita de Sant Honorat?

Ermita de Sant Honorat maintains a focus on its spiritual purpose and is not heavily commercialized. There are no cafes, pubs, or dedicated accommodation options directly at the hermitage. However, the nearby village of Randa offers some local eateries and guesthouses. For more extensive options, the larger towns in the plains of Mallorca are a short drive away.

What is the historical significance of Ermita de Sant Honorat?

The hermitage has a rich history dating back to the late 14th century, with its original chapel consecrated in 1397. It has served as a monastic retreat for centuries, undergoing reconstructions and reorganizations, notably by Blessed Francesc Palau i Quer in the 19th century. It's also the site where the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary was founded. Saint Honoratus, its patron, is also the patron saint of Algaida, with his feast day celebrated on January 16th.

Is there a specific circular walking route that includes Ermita de Sant Honorat?

While there isn't one universally designated 'circular walk' from the hermitage itself, many hikers create circular routes by combining the ascent from Randa village, visiting Ermita de Sant Honorat, continuing to Santuari de Cura at the summit, and then descending via a different path or the road back to Randa. This allows for varied scenery and a comprehensive experience of Puig de Randa's sanctuaries.
