The hospital originated from a convalescent home for convalescents built by the Krupp company in 1897. In 1920, the extended Krupp hospitals also opened to non-works employees.

In the mid-1970s, the old hospital building (apart from a few prebendary houses and the Altenhof chapel) was demolished. The current hospital opened in 1980.
