    Landevejscykling

Approx. 8 km long section of road without crossing traffic along the Rhine dam between Ketsch and Speyer with a view of the cathedral. Well paved and moderate traffic. Very popular with road cyclists, because you can accelerate over the full length.

The Rheindamm is the road bike training route badly there. He is driven by cars, but to an extent where you don't have to be afraid as a racing cyclist. Flat track, good asphalt. And mostly headwind. It is only recommended for hay fever sufferers who are allergic to poplars.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

What is the typical cycling difficulty of the Rheindamm Road Cycling Section?

The Rheindamm Road Cycling Section is generally considered easy to moderate. It features a flat profile and well-maintained asphalt, making it suitable for cyclists of varying fitness levels, including beginners and families. While the terrain itself isn't challenging, cyclists should be prepared for potential headwinds, which can add a moderate challenge, especially over the full 8 km stretch.

Are there specific parking areas recommended for accessing the Rheindamm Road Cycling Section?

While the Hockenheim train station is a convenient starting point for circular routes in the area, for direct access to the Rheindamm section, many cyclists find parking near the Ketsch or Speyer ends of the dam. Parking can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and sunny days, so arriving earlier in the day is advisable.

How long does it typically take to cycle the main Rheindamm section?

The core Rheindamm section between Ketsch and Speyer is approximately 8 km long. For a leisurely ride, cyclists might take 30-45 minutes one way. Road cyclists looking to accelerate can complete it much faster. If you're doing a circular route that includes this section, the total time will vary depending on the full route's length and your pace.

Is the Rheindamm Road Cycling Section suitable for families with children?

Yes, the Rheindamm Road Cycling Section is very family-friendly. Its flat terrain and good asphalt make it ideal for children. While there is some car traffic, it's generally moderate, and on Sunday mornings, it's almost zero, providing a safer and more relaxed environment for families. The scenic views and opportunities for breaks add to the family appeal.

Are dogs allowed on the Rheindamm Road Cycling Section?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the Rheindamm Road Cycling Section, provided they are kept on a leash. As it's a popular area for various recreational activities, ensuring your dog is well-behaved and doesn't interfere with other cyclists or pedestrians is important. Remember to bring water for your pet, especially on warmer days.

What are the best times of day or week to avoid crowds on the Rheindamm?

To avoid the busiest times, it's best to visit on weekday mornings. Weekends, especially Sunday mornings, are popular due to reduced car traffic, but this also means more cyclists and pedestrians. Early mornings on any day generally offer a more tranquil experience.

Are there any cafes or restaurants directly along the Rheindamm Road Cycling Section?

While the Johannishof beer garden is a well-known stopping point in the broader Hockenheimer Rheinbogen area, directly along the 8 km Rheindamm section itself, options are limited. It's advisable to bring your own snacks and drinks or plan stops in nearby towns like Ketsch or Speyer for more extensive dining choices.

What natural features or wildlife can be observed along the Rheindamm?

The Rheindamm offers constant views of the Rhine River and its impressive currents. You can also observe the natural beauty of old side arms of the Rhine, which serve as vital habitats for local wildlife. Birdwatching is a popular activity here, with various species inhabiting the nature reserve. Keep an eye out for diverse flora and fauna typical of a riverine landscape.

Can I access the Hockenheimring race track from the Rheindamm cycling route?

While the Rheindamm Road Cycling Section is in the general vicinity of Hockenheim, it does not directly lead to the Hockenheimring race track. You would need to take a detour from the main cycling route to visit the race track. There are specific cycling routes that pass closer to the Hockenheimring, but the Rheindamm itself focuses on the river landscape.

What should I wear when cycling the Rheindamm in autumn?

In autumn, the weather along the Rheindamm can be variable. Layers are key: a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a windproof and water-resistant outer shell are recommended. Gloves, a hat or headband to cover your ears, and reflective clothing for potentially shorter daylight hours are also advisable. The open nature of the dam means you'll be exposed to wind, so dressing warmly is important.

Are there any loop routes that incorporate the Rheindamm Road Cycling Section?

Yes, there are several loop routes that incorporate the Rheindamm Road Cycling Section. For instance, a popular 20 km circular route starts from the Hockenheim train station and takes you through the Hockenheimer Rheinbogen nature reserve, including parts of the Rheindamm. Many cyclists also combine the Rheindamm with other paths in the region to create longer, customized loops.
