Leipzig Central Station is the hub of Leipzig's transport network and, due to its architecture and shopping opportunities, is very popular with both tourists and the people of Leipzig themselves.
The station area covers around 80,000 square meters, giving Leipzig the title of "Europe's largest terminus". With around 1,300 trains and 120,000 travelers and visitors every day, it is very busy.
Since 2013, the Leipzig city tunnel, which integrates Leipzig into the network of the new S-Bahn Central Germany and further strengthens local and long-distance traffic, has also contributed to the heavy use of the station.

The promenades in Leipzig Central Station were opened in 1997. For their construction, the floor of the cross-platform was opened and two underground shopping plateaus built, which are connected by a tunnel under the inner city ring with the city center.
