The ruin is also called the stick tooth of the Waldviertel. At the end of the 12th century Hadmar von Kuenring had the castle built on a huge granite rock. From 1277 to 1593 the ruin was the seat of the district court. The 25 meter high, pentagonal keep partially collapsed more than 500 years ago. From then on the castle was left to decay.

The ruin of the Höhenburg is located on a granite rock at around 900 meters above sea level on the western edge of the Waldviertel highlands and is well worth seeing.
