Varlar Castle, in my memories the place where you could go ice skating ages ago! Today it's a lovely destination, easily reached by bicycle, mountain bike, or on foot. The castle, with its surrounding moat, fields, and nearby forest, invites you to spend time there. Geese and other birds can be seen in the meadows. The castle itself can only be viewed from the outside and from a distance, as it's private property! But you can get quite close by following the paths along the moat.

Varlar Abbey, often referred to as a monastery, was a Premonstratensian monastery founded by the Counts of Cappenberg in the Münsterland. The monastery, which was converted into Varlar Castle, is in the farming community of Varlar in the Osterwick district of Rosendahl. The community there existed from about 1123/24 until secularization in 1803. Afterwards the monastery became the property of the game and Rhine counts of Salm, who took over a large part of the extensive ecclesiastical property and for a short time also became rulers.
