From 1873 to 1939, the Hoffmann Kiln played an important role in Craven's industry. The kiln was constructed for the Craven Lime Company to burn limestone from a nearby quarry into lime. Local farmers then used this on their crops and building companies added it to their mortar. The kiln closed at the start of the 20th century.
In 1951, a ceremony was organised to demolish the chimney, but in a funny turn of events, it fell on its own accord the day before.
