Although now ruined, Reigate Castle was once an important stronghold in the town. Built around 1150, the castle went on to be captured by the French in 1216 before passing through the hands of various Lords of the Manor of Reigate. The castle was lived in until the 16th century when it began to decay. After being used as a garrison during the Civil War in 1648, it was demolished.
In 1777, a mock medieval gateway was constructed on the ruins, which you can still see today. The Castle grounds are used as a public gardens.
