The pilgrimage church Maria Schnee bei Heiligen Stein is enthroned on the Großer Zwickelberg, southeast of Reichenau an der Maltsch and belongs to the community Unterhaid. This means that it is very close to the Austrian border and not only invites hikers along the Burgen- und Schlösserweg to take a quick look inside.

A very special place of pilgrimage...
According to an old legend, the Madonna fled to the Bohemian Forest and rested on a granite rock. The hard stone clung to her body, which is still visible today: a stone chair with a backrest and footstool on the Großer Zwickelberg near Unterhaid.

In the 1980s, as the church was inaccessible from Austria due to the Iron Curtain, the Maria Schnee pilgrimage church was built on Hiltschnerberg in Leopoldschlag. There is visual contact between the two Maria Schnee churches.
