A stone Romanesque chapel seems to have stood in Schönborn as early as the middle of the 13th century. A church was built in its place in 1607, but in 1652 it fell victim to a fire caused by a lightning strike. As a result, the current church building was built between 1653 and 1664, incorporating elements of the previous buildings.

According to information from the State Office for Archeology and the State Office for Prehistory in Dresden, the village of Schönborn already had a stone chapel (church) in the Romanesque style in the middle of the 13th century (around 1250). After its destruction in 1653, it was rebuilt until 1664. The church interior is characterized as a hall with a retracted, rectangular choir.
