This square used to be the political and commercial center of Piacenza. It owes its name to two masterpieces by Francesco Mochi (1580-1654), the Baroque equestrian statues** of Dukes Alexander and Ranuccio I Farnese. The gigantic structure that towers above the square is the Gotico**, the former town hall.

This is the magnificent Piazza Cavalli: it represents the fulcrum of the city of Piacenza; previously it was called "Piazza Grande", its name was changed after the arrangement of the two equestrian monuments.

The square was built in the 13th century and is the most important political-economic center of the city. The enormous mass of the Palazzo Pubblico, traditionally called Gothic, dominates it.
Opposite the Gothic palace is the Governor's Palace, built in 1787 to a design by the talented Piacenza architect Lotario Tomba.
On the sides of the square, which was repaved in the last decade of the eighteenth century, are two bronze equestrian statues of the Dukes of Farnese, commissioned by the community of Piacenza to Francesco Mochi di Montevarchi.
