The fort of Pietole is a military structure built in 1808 by the French general François de Chasseloup-Laubat, Napoleon's envoy.
During the First World War, the fort was used as a warehouse, but a fire on 28.04.1917 destroyed much of the powder magazine.
Over time, the fort was abandoned and the military finally abandoned it in 1983. Today it is in fact abandoned.

I was amazed to discover this Napoleonic fortress in such an abandoned place. I then discovered that from here it was possible to regulate the waters of the Mincio so as to flood the area south of the city of Mantua, isolating the city for defensive purposes. I got there quite by accident and to avoid a longer ride; the narrow streets that surround it are mostly dirt paths or unpaved roads, well marked, easily passable and very pleasant to walk after the previous kilometers of asphalt.
