The monument 🗿 is located at the Postbrug Kapelle, in the immediate vicinity of where fierce fighting took place in the May days of 1940 ⚔️. The French army came to the aid of the Netherlands after the German invasion. Zeeland was important because of the Western Scheldt 🌊 to the port of Antwerp ⚓. The monument specifically commemorates the French defense in the triangle Wemeldinge, Hansweert and Kapelle 📍. The defense failed ❌. In Kapelle, dozens of fallen Frenchmen ⚰️ are still buried on the military cemetery 🪖.

The monument consists, among other things, of a block of French limestone on which
a French helmet lies. At the top is a crest, at the front a jumping grenade and the letters R.F. The first symbolizes the infantry and the second is the abbreviation of République Française. On the front is a bronze plaque with a Dutch and French text. The units involved are also listed. The monument facing the Post Bridge has the French tricolore in relief on the side. A copper palm and a symbol of Le Souvenir Français are attached to the block.
