The name New Helgoland probably comes from the zeitgeist of the colonial era; in 1890, the offshore island of Helgoland was transferred from English to German territory in exchange for Zanzibar (Melchers Hütte was also known as New Cameroon at the time). Some also claim that, when viewed from the Weyerberg in winter, the hut protrudes like the Helgoland rock from the flooded Hammen lowland and that this gives it its name.
