This type of single-phase electric locomotive was built at the same time as the opening of the Valle Brembana electric railway.
The locomotives of the FVB 1 - 5 series were built between 1905 and 1906 by the Officine Breda of Milan, for the mechanical part, while the electrical part was built by Westinghouse of Vado Ligure, based on its own design.

The gauge of 1435 mm allowed interchange with the other FS lines, the initial power of units 1 3 4 5 was 200 HP, while unit 2 had 300 HP.
Subsequently all the units were standardized to a power of 300 HP, with an approved speed of 40 km/h.
Powered by an alternating current of 6000 Volts via a suspended catenary, they came into operation with a black colour, replaced around the 1950s by the isabella colour.
