The parish church of St. Hippolyt is located on a hill above the center of Ottmarsheim. To the south of the church is a walled cemetery, which was once only accessible through the church's tower base, which was designed as a passageway. A steep staircase to the north of the church once formed the only access to the church, cemetery, and the village's old schoolhouse, which was located on the walled northern forecourt. The entire complex therefore has a distinctly defensive appearance, which gives the church the character of a fortified church.

In its current form, the church was essentially completed in 1502. An inscription on the north wall of the tower passage dates from this year.
