Probably the oldest building in all of California is here at the customs house, where the first Spanish harbor developed in what was then the undeveloped province of Alta California in the 1770s, a backwater of their Mexico colony.

The Custom House, built around 1821 by the Mexican government, is California's first historic landmark and oldest public building. It is the site where the first American flag was raised on July 7, 1846, declaring California a part of the United States. It is a National Historic Landmark and a California Historic Landmark.
