The Thuringia countryside, culture, and endless sky will stay in your memory for many years to come.
Whether you are a professional or beginner, there are many possibilities for mountain bikers in FEEN-Bike-Paradies Saalfeld MTB centre. In this collection, we present six Tours in detail. Ranging in difficulty from easy to challenging, you ride on gravel paths, over roots, and along single trails as you explore the beautiful nature in Thuringian Forest. The Tours are between 30 to 50 kilometres (18.6 to 31 miles) with up to 1,000 metres (3,280 feet) of elevation gain. Your calves will have a good workout in Saalfeld.
Wonderful views over the Saale River, which is dammed in Hohenwarte and Leibis, accompany you on all of the Tours. At 413 kilometres (1,354 feet), the river is the second-longest tributary of the Elbe River, after the Moldau. The Saale winds its way through gently rolling, forested hills. From Kamsdorf you follow the dreamy valley of the Wutsche to the vicinity of its source at Gosswitz.Soon you will reach Gustavs Ruh, one of the best viewpoints over the western part of the Hohenwartetalsperre. A beautiful, slightly rooted trail runs from the neighboring Klinkhardtshöhe to the “Waldhotel Am Stausee”. On the sun terrace you can enjoy food and drink and a wonderful view of the Saale.A hiking path with a short zigzag trail leads to the driveway over the dam. Here you can shorten the tour by taking the Saaleradweg to Kaulsdorf. Otherwise there is a marked rise up to the upper basin of the hydroelectric power station on the Amalienhöhe.On the trail from the parents' bench to the pipe bridge, you should expect hikers on weekends, as this spectacular place is popular. It now goes rapidly down to Eichicht, where you cycle a piece on the Saale Cycle Path. In Breternitz you leave the path again and follow the Saaletrail from Weischwitz to Reschwitz. The tour options on the Kulm, whose striking, white Kulmberghaus is an eye-catcher in the Saale Valley, are very diverse. This is due to the dense network of trails, which are frequented by hikers, especially on weekends. That demands a lot of consideration. Alternatively, you can also do the tour during the week.The climb to the Kulmturm is worthwhile because of the 360-degree panorama. The first trail round on the Kulm then leads over the Kame panoramic view down to Oberpreilipp. If you already know the further route over the Schillerhöhe, you can shorten it here and drive directly to the Saale via Unterpreilipp. You return to Remschütz on the Saale Cycle Path.In the village of Remschütz, you can decide whether you want to continue the second trail variant today or ride on another day - for example as a small after-work lap. If you decide to do it, it goes up again via Dorfkulm on a neat tar ramp. This is never heavily driven by cars, so you can cycle here in a relaxed manner.The second trail begins as a sharp turn trail and then leads you directly through the Melktal down to the Saaleradweg. From there it is only a few hundred meters to Remschütz. For a relaxed end to your day, you can drive directly to the Saale beach in Remschütz and stretch your legs there.

The small and short ramps on the way to the Schillerhöhe with the beautiful view of Heidecksburg Castle are the perfect setting for even more trail fun.After passing through the peaceful village of Zeigerheim, the long and steep ramp at the Liske follows. The reward for the sweaty affair are the trails with root passages on the Kessel and Gölitz walls with sensational views of the Thuringian mountains. At the Fröbeldenkmal you will reach a place steeped in history. At this vantage point, the wonderful term “kindergarten” was coined, which has found its way into the world.Friedrich Froebel (1782–1852) developed the concept of the kindergarten by assigning educational value to play as a typical child-like way of life. The kindergarten differed from the "child custody institutions" that existed in the 19th century in the underlying pedagogy, which was expanded to include education, upbringing and care. After the driveway via Oberwirbach, the concentrated load follows. From the Hainberg down into the Schwarzatal it's almost 200 meters of the finest zigzag trail. The trail is not roughly blocked, but rather fluid, so that you can use the rear wheel offset well - in whatever technical variant.In Bad Blankenburg, a detour to the Chrysoprase weir on the Schwarza is a must. On this round tour you drive on an impressive route through the mountains and valleys around the Saalfelder Höhe with fantastic views of the Leibis-Lichte dam, the Thuringian slate mountains and the Franconian Forest.After the start of the tour and leaving the Saalfeld urban area near Garnsdorf, the tour begins with an atmospheric start on beautiful forest paths through the Wittmannsgereuther valley. You reach the Saalfelder Höhe after a crisp gravel ramp near Witzendorf. You have to be very attentive on the fast descent so that you do not miss the branch to the right into the valley of the Weißen Sorbitz.You have quickly reached the idyllic Döschnitz and continue on a beautiful forest path to Rohrbach. This is where the ascent through the Kalte Rinne to the Meuraer Heide begins. The wide, open areas are pastureland for the Haflinger stud Meura. A rest is recommended there. We continue on a beautiful section of the trail to the Schneiderfelsen, one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the Leibis-Lichte dam.At the Meurasteinen the ascent through the wild and romantic Suhl valley to the Leipzig tower follows. There is again a resting place with a dream panorama of the Thuringian Slate Mountains and the Franconian Forest. The route takes you back to Saalfeld on partly winding paths and over the wide areas of the Saalfelder Höhe to Eyba.If the weather is right, a rest at the legendary restaurant “Zum Egon” is a good idea before you start the final descent back to Saalfeld. With 600 meters of altitude to be overcome, you know what you've done in the evening. Your tour starts in Saalfeld and initially runs along the beautiful Saale on the Saale cycle path towards Rudolstadt.Soon you will leave the Saale valley and drive uphill to Schaala and on to the historic fortified church to the holiday farm Domain in Groschwitz. From Groschwitz you take the "Herrenstrasse", which once connected the manorial estates of Heidecksburg and Groschwitz, towards Rudolstadt.
We continue on easily navigable forest paths and single trails, which lead via Mörla to the Löwenbank - a nice place to take a break and enjoy the view of Rudolstadt. Now it goes downhill to Rudolstadt Heidecksburg. Take a little time for a tour of the baroque castle and the wonderful view over the city.Via one of the castle entrances you drive down to the market square with the town hall and through the beautiful old town streets over the Saale to Heinrich-Heine-Park. Here you can discover a historical highlight with the open-air museum "Thuringian Farmhouses" and immerse yourself in life in the Free State a hundred years ago.At the end of the tour it gets tough again, because now there is a short but steep ascent to the Marienturm. At the top you will be rewarded with a great view of Rudolstadt, the Heidecksburg and the Saale valley and enjoy Thuringian specialties in the inn. The path continues over forest roads and single trails to Schlosskulm. Now the stage is almost done: after a quick descent to Remschütz, the starting point of the tour is reached again.
This tour combines regional cultural highlights with sporty trails in the forests around Saalfeld - at a crisp 900 meters of altitude. You start in Saalfeld and drive along the Saale in the direction of the Remschützer Sandberge, which were used to mine sand and sandstone in the 19th and 20th centuries. It continues through the Grauwinkeltal and the Uhlstädter Heide in the direction of Weißbach.
Via the Pfaffensteig, a dreamlike, one and a half kilometer long single trail, you reach the village of Weißbach in Teufelsgrund. Past the idyllic church, the Weißenburg with beer garden follows a little later - a stop is almost a must - and then the rafting museum. On tar roads with little traffic, you continue to Partschefeld and Kleinkochberg to the Luisenturm, from which you get a unique view of the region. The next highlight of the tour is the Großkochberg moated castle and lovers' theater, which was once the country residence of Goethe's lover Frau von Stein. Through a picturesque valley, past the romantic Weitersdorf chapel, you continue over Teichweiden to Rudolstadt and from here along the Saale back to the starting point.
On this tour you will explore the idyllic Schwarzatal with delightful mountain and valley trips, which add up through a rapid up and down of 1,000 meters of altitude. You start in Saalfeld and drive along the Saale to Schwarza and via Bad Blankenburg into the Schwarzatal. And off you go: steeply uphill in the direction of Silberberg, past the Griesbachfelsen, the Teufelstreppe and the Fürstenstand.
Through the villages of Böhlplatten and Cordobang you finally get to Schwarzburg via the Trippstein. On the way you can always enjoy great views of the Schwarzatal. And now another highlight is waiting for you: The armory of Schloss Schwarzburg shows the oldest and only completely preserved princely armory collection in Germany. An armory, now an arsenal, is a place where weapons and military equipment were stored and repaired.
You will find a special highlight right on the Schwarza, because here you will find a great swing with which you can fly over the water. Here you can take a deep breath and gather strength for the next ascent. Because now the tour goes uphill again, then over wide forest paths past the Mooshäuschen to Dittersdorfer Höhe with a wonderful panorama.
Congratulations, you have reached the highest point of your tour. Now go back to the Schwarzatal on wide forest roads and forest paths until you reach the Eberstein hunting lodge. What follows is a great single trail, over which you drive back to Bad Blankenburg in full flow. Take a look at the chrysoprase weir on the Schwarza - an impressive structure! From there it goes over the Kupferstraße back to the starting point of your tour.
Today it will be educational, because on your tour you will drive past a sunken village and experience the origin of hydropower on the Saale - and at the end a sweet surprise. With an altitude of 750 meters, the area around Saalfeld shows you once again that you can cycle uphill not only in the Alps. First you start leisurely with an ascent over the Rote Berg to Großkamsdorf. On your way you will pass the former Kamsdorf mine, where you can ride a mountain bike underground today. Pretty crazy!
It continues in the direction of Bucha and a little later on forest and meadow paths into the Saale valley to Alterbucht. On nice summer days you can take a long break with bathing fun or take a little ride in a rowboat or pedal boat. Along the banks of the Hohenwarte Dam you now drive over the Lettersberg to the Presswitzer Spitze and now it's getting very historic: Here, in 1938, the village of Presswitz was completely flooded to make room for the dam.
In the direction of the dam, you continue directly on the water and your journey is loosened up with three crossings of the Saale. Once you drive over the dam, then over the Saalesteig in Hohenwarte and later over the Eichicht dam. Here you can enjoy the wonderful views of the dam's waterworks and the mountain landscape once more.
The Saale cycle path takes you to the idyllic villages of Eichicht and Breternitz. Now you follow the Saaletrail to Reschwitz. At the entrance to Saalfeld it is worth taking a look at the magnificent plank wall - a 100 meter high national geotope with an information point. At the end of the tour you can buy delicious chocolate and the famous Saalfeld nougat bags in the Sarotti factory outlet and review the great tour.
This tour attracts with regional insider tips and unique panoramas - and a crisp 1,190 meters of altitude. But as the saying goes: Nothing comes from nothing. Tight legs and great views need to be earned. From Saalfeld your route first leads via Bad Blankenburg into the Schwarzatal.
From here you continue via Greifenstein Castle, where you can pay a visit to the in-house falconry, to Großgölitz. And the next highlight is already waiting for you, because a local wood artist has built a sculpture park here that will amaze you. There is also a small distillery in town - another reason to make a stop in Großgölitz.Freshly strengthened, it goes uphill via Thälendorf in the direction of the Ehrenstein castle ruins, a former count residence of the Schwarzburger. You will reach the highest point of the tour, the large Kalkberg, a little later. During the years of German division, the National People's Army (NVA) was stationed here. After reunification, an MDR transmitter was installed instead.You get to Sundremda via forest and field paths via the Altremda reservoir. Past the Groschwitz airfield, continue towards Keilhau. From the Kesselberg it goes quickly to the Kesselwarte with a great view of Bad Blankenburg and Greifenstein Castle. On narrow forest paths and single trails you will then reach the idyllic village of Zeigerheim. The last big ascent of the tour to the nine and a half meter high Geschwister-Scholl-Turm, which was built in the style of a small knight's castle, now follows over the Zeigerheimer Berg. Single trails and gravel paths lead towards Rudolstadt. Following the Saale, you finally come back to the starting point.
This time it doesn't go that high - you conquer 490 meters in altitude from the Saale valley to the heights of the fairy grotto town of Saalfeld. The tour starts in Saalfeld towards Obernitz, past the chocolate factory with factory outlet and the National Geotope Bohlenwand.
Now it gets tough: There follows a steep ascent to the Pfaffenberg and over the Gleitsch to the Teufelsbrücke, a natural stone arch well worth seeing. Afterwards, a great single trail leads quickly back to the valley above a quarry. It continues along the Saale over the Saale trail to Reschwitz. On the Saalfeld "Höhenweg" you continue in the direction of the garden peaks with a beautiful view of the whole of Saalfeld and further in the direction of the fairy grottoes adventure world.
Make sure you plan a little time here, because a tour of the most colorful show grotto in the world and a break with original Thuringian bratwurst are absolutely worthwhile. On a narrow dirt road you continue towards Spitzberg and enjoy fantastic views again. What follows is a long descent towards the center of Saalfeld. As the last highlight of the tour you will reach the Saalfeld Castle and the Castle Park. Along the Saale it goes back to the starting point of the tour.

With an altitude of around 1,100 meters, the tour is particularly suitable for ambitious amateur bikers who like to challenge themselves. You start at the parking lot in Hohenwarte and first cross the Saale over the impressive dam wall.It continues on single trails and forest paths in the Saale valley to Alterbucht - a popular bathing resort on the beautiful Saale beach. You should definitely have your bathing suit with you! Soon you get to the next highlight of the tour, the moss house with a great view of the reservoir.Following the path in the direction of Wilhelmsdorf, it goes over smooth paths back in the direction of the water to the Portenschmiede campsite. Through the Portengrund you drive uphill to the Bockfelsen, a lookout point made of rugged slate. Here you think you are in the Norwegian fjords - breathtaking!A rapid descent takes you to the Neumannshof campsite. It continues on the most beautiful section of the tour directly above the water to the Linkenmühle. Here you can take a short break and enjoy a huge sundae. And again there is a highlight, because you cross the Saale with the mill ferry.Fortunately, your legs rested briefly on the ferry, because now follows the longest ascent of the tour to the so-called Hohen Leite, which is not for nothing. Your reward follows promptly, because from here you have a magnificent view over Althenroth and Neumannshof. Past the Drachenschwanzhütte, it goes back down to the banks of the Saale to the Hopfenmühle campsite. This is followed by the Hermannsfelsen and the place Neidenberga. You cover the last kilometers on the water to the starting point of the tour on tar.
Great views of the Saale and exciting highlights such as the Saalleiten and Sandberge accompany you on your tour. You start in Saalfeld and drive over the Zeiss Bridge on the bike path to Röblitz. Before the tour branches off towards Uhlstädter Heide, you will see Ranis Castle on the horizon. A very impressive building!After a few kilometers on forest and forest paths you will reach the ruins of Töpfersdorf Castle. The castle was still in use until 1850. From here it is not far to the Saalleiten, an approximately two kilometer long and demanding single trail directly above the Saale, which reaches just before Rückersdorf - and runs absolutely idyllically along the Saale.
In Weißenburg you can visit the Weißenburg and take a break in the beer garden. Freshly strengthened, it continues rapidly on forest roads and simple single trails to Langenschade. Another ascent and descent over the Mühlberg and the Lindingberg finally leads you back into the valley to Remschütz and past the sand mountains. Then you drive back to the starting point of the tour happy and satisfied.
The tour is short, but no less demanding - and just the thing for experienced mountain bikers who like to ride trails and a few meters in altitude - 620 in number, spread over just 29 kilometers. It starts in Saalfeld and initially to Remschütz. Over a sandy and rooted ascent, it goes past the Remschützer sand pit to Dorfkulm.The path continues over narrow and steep passages to the Kulmberghaus. Here you can take a short break and enjoy the beautiful view over the Saale region from the observation tower. Your snack is also a good way to strengthen yourself. Then it goes back to the valley to Oberpreilipp on smooth single trails.From there, some very narrow and winding forest paths lead further east until you reach the Marienturm. Here you can stop and enjoy the view of Rudolstadt and the surrounding area. Again there are crisp and demanding single trails to Langenschade. At the end, it goes over the ant and cat hill until a steep and technically demanding descent leads back to the Remschützer sand pit. From here the route leads back to the starting point of the tour. This tour from Neuhaus am Rennweg down to the Schwarzatal to Saalfeld is particularly suitable for a family excursion. There are numerous rest areas and shelters for breaks along the route and the paths are easy to drive on. The tour starts at the train station in Neuhaus am Rennweg.On easy-to-drive forest paths, it first goes downhill, past Cursdorf and Deesbach. From here the route leads over the Kirchberg and the Fröbelturm. This was built in memory of Friedrich Froebel, the founder of the kindergarten. The tour continues to Oberweißbach. Here you can make a worthwhile stopover and take the beautiful Oberweißbacher Bergbahn to the top and enjoy the view.A steep descent over forest paths finally leads via Sitzendorf to Schwarzburg - past the castle with the oldest and only completely preserved armory collection. Following the Schwarza downstream, you will continue through the Schwarzatal to Bad Blankenburg. At the chrysoprase weir you can linger and take a break. Then the tour takes you along the Saale to Saalfeld.
