Golden autumn – hiking in the Schmallenberger Sauerland

Hiking Collection by Schmallenberger Sauerland

In the Schmallenberger Sauerland, a golden autumn is on the agenda. In North Rhine-Westphalia, a region in western Germany, the so-called golden villages are excellent starting points for hikes during autumn. In this Collection, we’ve put together 12 ‘Gold Routes’ in the Schmallenberger Sauerland which lead you through charming villages with half-timbered cottages and hidden alleyways. Autumnal hiking is simply beautiful here.

The so-called ‘Gold Villages’ were awarded their title during a nationwide competition, ‘Unser Dorf soll schöner werden’ (our village shall become more beautiful), in which villages show what they have to offer. Aside from pretty villages, the Schmallenberger Sauerland has much to discover. You can expect wonderful views of the Rothaar Mountains, idyllic valleys, and quiet forests. The Hochsauerland is a hilly region with plenty of variety: enjoy magnificent panoramas from Kahler Asten mountain; stroll along the banks of the Lenne, a tributary of the River Ruhe; or relax beside the Esmecke Reservoir.

We’ve included a range of hikes so you can choose one that suits you best depending on your fitness level and what you fancy. The routes are suitable for children so you can turn your autumn hikes into a family holiday. At the end of each Tour, you can soak up the beauty of the ‘Gold Villages’ and stop for a bite to eat. You will also find a range of accommodation in the region.

So, set off for the beautiful Rothaar Mountains and enjoy an especially golden autumn on these hikes.

A hut with a fabulous view, wonderful nature and even a treasure - this is what awaits you on the Golddorf route around Kirchrarbach. As always, you start your journey of discovery right in the center of the village. You leave the Kirchrarbach houses behind you and first march at the foot of the Ringelskopf towards the Kyrill Hut. In order to reach her - and the amazing view that you will be served with her - you have to master an easy ascent. The panorama definitely makes up for the effort. There is also a small treasure chest filled with refreshing drinks very close to the hut. Exactly the right thing to do after all the exertion, so take a long break here. Then it’s going downhill again, at least for now: through a depression, then again properly uphill, you finally start with the final spurt. Past the Kreuzkapelle on the Steimel you will soon find yourself at your starting point in Kirchrarbach.

This tour goes up and down around the Golddorf Bödefeld. Of course, you can be sure of great views and beautiful nature. And you can also sniff a little history on the way.In front of the gates of the parish church St. Cosmas and Damian in the heart of Bödefeld you cast your gaze at the memorable golden G on a red background and start to follow it. Without long detours, it leads you up to the so-called Hollenhaus, which is beautifully placed in the deciduous forest and offers you a wonderful view. Forest women ("Hollen") are said to have once lived in a rock cave directly below. You can read exactly what the legend says on a sign.A depression follows the hill, in which you will pass a deer enclosure. Then it's one last time: go uphill. First over a farm road, then over wonderful paths and past idyllic resting places, from where you can always enjoy a clear view of Bödefeld. As soon as you reach the first houses in the village, the path brings you back to your starting point.

Balm for the soul - not least because of the great views that keep opening up along the way.You never lose sight of Latrop himself. You go around it, so to speak. And shortly before your destination you will also pass a nice rest area with a wooden hammock, bench and again a great view. Put your feet up! For as long as you want, because you don't have to go far from here to the starting point.
