In the Schmallenberger Sauerland, a golden autumn is on the agenda. In North Rhine-Westphalia, a region in western Germany, the so-called golden villages are excellent starting points for hikes during autumn. In this Collection, we’ve put together 12 ‘Gold Routes’ in the Schmallenberger Sauerland which lead you through charming villages with half-timbered cottages and hidden alleyways. Autumnal hiking is simply beautiful here.
The so-called ‘Gold Villages’ were awarded their title during a nationwide competition, ‘Unser Dorf soll schöner werden’ (our village shall become more beautiful), in which villages show what they have to offer. Aside from pretty villages, the Schmallenberger Sauerland has much to discover. You can expect wonderful views of the Rothaar Mountains, idyllic valleys, and quiet forests. The Hochsauerland is a hilly region with plenty of variety: enjoy magnificent panoramas from Kahler Asten mountain; stroll along the banks of the Lenne, a tributary of the River Ruhe; or relax beside the Esmecke Reservoir.
We’ve included a range of hikes so you can choose one that suits you best depending on your fitness level and what you fancy. The routes are suitable for children so you can turn your autumn hikes into a family holiday. At the end of each Tour, you can soak up the beauty of the ‘Gold Villages’ and stop for a bite to eat. You will also find a range of accommodation in the region.
So, set off for the beautiful Rothaar Mountains and enjoy an especially golden autumn on these hikes.
