With idyllic half-timbered houses lining the streets of the old town and a magnificent city wall, Forchheim looks like a fairytale. This Franconian town is brimming with historic breweries which have been producing Franconia’s favourite drink here for centuries – beer. Outside of the city, you can also enjoy a cold beverage in the beer gardens in the Kellerwald forest. This is where the picturesque landscape of mountains, river valleys, forests, and orchard meadows begins. A hike through the Franconian countryside always includes beer gardens and inns where you can stop for a break to try delicious Franconia delicacies.

The Walberla plateau is a popular escape for locals and can be reached on a day hike from the city. As you walk, you follow in the footsteps of the Celts who settled here. The Ehrenbürg, Örtlberg, Retterner Kanzel, and Högelstein peaks all offer spectacular views over the region. If you prefer, you can walk from beer garden to beer garden: there’s plenty of choice in the Kellerwald forest. Hiking along picturesque paths on the Reuther Hut also brings you to the Swiss Cellar there.

You can combine all seven hikes with a walk through Forchheim old town. There are plenty of sights to explore in the city, such as the traditional breweries. These are connected to the Kellerwald forest via the ‘Walk of Beer’ trail. Luckily, Forchheim is easy to reach by train, so you can treat yourself to a beer with your car parked safely at home.

The paths through the Franconian forests are shaded even on hot summer days. However, the Tours can also be wonderful in winter, depending on the weather. After the trees shed their leaves in autumn, you can enjoy even wider views. If you want to combine your hike with a social event, you can check out the Annafest, which is celebrated yearly at the end of July in the Kellerwald forest. The Walberlafest, which is held annually on the first weekend in May on the Ehrenbürg, is also worth a visit.

The famous “Walk of Fame” in Hollywood is quite a long way from Franconia. Fortunately, there is a path here in Forchheim that may even be a little more fun to walk: the “Walk of Beer”. Instead of world stars, the breweries are marked with a star on the floor. Via QR codes on site, you can find out more about the four that are left of the former twelve private and two communal breweries.
