When you visit the charming town of Kulmbach in the Franconian Forest in southern Germany, you can expect to experience the combination of a lively town, countryside and rivers in a new way. We’ve put together ten circular walks to introduce you to the region’s peaceful nature and historic towns – there’s a lot to discover in and around Kulmbach.
One of the most well-known hiking trails in the region, the FrankenwaldSteigla, guides you through magical forests, up to scenic heights and along gushing streams. The signposted route is split into three themes: “Listen to silence”, “Breathe deep”, and “Understanding the forest”. These hikes take you on a journey for all your senses through the most beautiful landscapes in the Franconian Forest. Each route takes around half a day, but you can take your time if you want to spend longer nature.

Whichever trail you choose, a snack break is never far away. Regional delicacies are, after all, an important part of every hiking trip. Along the way, you will stop off in charming little towns which are also the starting points of some of the Tours, discover enchanting valleys, roam imposing fortresses, and visit quaint little chapels.

    A wonderfully natural and pleasantly quiet tour awaits you on the Achatzmühlen-Weg. Starting from the well-known pilgrimage site Marienweiher and its baroque papal basilica, this FrankenwaldSteigla leads you through the wonderful nature of the Franconian Forest.Arrived in the heart of Marienweiher and the basilica already under the microscope, you leave the houses of the place behind you for the time being.     "Knock" - this is a hill from which you have a wonderful view and also the feeling of being able to breathe the vastness in front of you. Three such specimens await you on this FrankenwaldSteigla.It starts at the market square in Presseck. Several hiking trails, such as the Frankenweg, the Siebenfreund-Weg and the Franconian Stone Kingdom meander here. But you get on the FrankenwaldSteig and let it lead you straight to the first knock, the Pressecker knock. From the wooden tower that towers up here, you can enjoy an amazing view. Then the next highlight follows - the Schnebeser Knock, on whose lounger you can make yourself comfortable for a while.One thing is still missing: The Kreuzkock gives you a final, wonderful all-round view - then you go via Heinersreuth with its two castles into a quiet forest area with many old trees. The “Three Barons”, which are among the oldest Douglas firs in all of Germany, are slumbering right in the middle.     If you long for beautiful nature and soothing silence, the Rehbachtal is a wonderful destination. This FrankenwaldSteigla takes you from Neuensorg near Marktleugast to the “Käismühl” small rotary mill. You have already covered a good two of the almost eight kilometers here - so a break with a delicious snack or a freshly smoked fish is always a good idea.Past the Großrehmühle and the lovely Hinterrehberg chapel, the path then leads you into quiet forests. You walk there on a narrow path and always along the Rehbach. You can enjoy the sound of the rippling water and the play of colors that is offered to you on sunny days between the leaves and trees.     The FrankenwaldSteig is a 242-kilometer round trip through the wonderful Franconian Forest. This 17.5-kilometer loop is one section of it. It lets you experience the breathtaking views and magical nature around Kulmbach.It starts in Gössersdorf, which is best reached by public transport, because the tour will not bring you back here. You march off via the old army and trade route. First you walk past the historic Samelstein on the Kirchleuser Platte and a few kilometers later you climb up to the lookout tower “Look around” on Patersberg.
