Explore riverside landscapes & Franconian cities – hikes in Fürth

Hiking Collection by Franken Tourismus

With the Pegnitz, Rednitz and Regnitz rivers and wide meadows, Fürth is a big city with a green heart. Within a stone's throw from the charming old town and half-timbered houses, you find the three rivers, kilometres of riverside paths, a large city park, and forest. This mix of culture, tradition and nature makes the city a vibrant place to explore on foot. The 10 walks in this Collection take you to our favourite places in Fürth. Thanks to a great public transport network of underground trains, buses, and trains, you can easily enjoy short or long walks in and around the city.

From Fürth central station you can walk along the riverbank to the Solarberg mountain north of the city. There’s a great view from the top over the Main-Danube Canal and the surrounding countryside. You can also walk along the canal to reach the mountain. It’s also worthwhile exploring the streets of Fürth. A themed trail takes you to four medicinal springs in the city or you can visit some pubs and breweries on the beer hike. If you’re hiking as a family, you can take a short walk to discover the town’s playgrounds and mini-golf courses. Walking between the city park and the old town takes you through some of the most beautiful corners of the city.

A short walk from the centre, you reach the city forest where there are many pleasant hiking trails. Look out for the animals that call the forest home: you can easily spot birds and squirrels and may even encounter wild boars and deer which live in extensive enclosures in the forest. You can also stay in the centre of Fürth to enjoy a few hours in the countryside. Between the river meadows, small ponds, and parks, there are several ‘green hidden places’ waiting to be discovered by you.

All of the routes are beautiful when trees are green during summer. But, it’s also worth walking through Fürth in autumn, when the leaves come alive with colour. Meanwhile, in winter, mist wafts over the meadows in the early morning, creating a mystical atmosphere. When the sun comes out, the frosty meadows glisten, competing with summer’s beauty.

From the city to nature - that happens very quickly in Fürth. It only takes a few minutes from the main train station to the beautiful city park. And that's it for the city - from now on it will stay green. In the park you will discover beautifully laid out flower beds and a wonderfully fragrant rose garden. Then you descend to the pond and cross the Pegnitz. In the so-called Wiesengrund you now always walk north along the river. The path runs beautifully shady past the districts of Ronhof and Stadeln. This will take you to the water wheel, where several benches invite you to take a break. On the other side of the river, your destination, the solar mountain, rises behind the meadows. You cross the next bridge and walk a little parallel to the road to the foot of the mountain. Now comes the only noteworthy ascent of the hike up to the almost 350 meter high Solarberg. But you don't have to overcome 100 of them yourself. From above you can enjoy the view and let a little wind blow around your nose. You either come back to Fürth on the same route or you get on the bus at the crossroads at the bottom of the mountain. Line 173 will bring you back to the train station. You can take line 171 to the clinic, where you can change to the subway. You can find the timetables at vgn.de.

In Fürth there are several healing springs that you can visit on this way. All are equipped with information boards that tell you more about the springs and the minerals in the water. It starts at the city limits subway station. You walk north to the Pegnitz, on the banks of which one of the city's two King Ludwig springs reminds of the former spa in Fürth. Then you cross the river and soon find yourself at the Espan spring. This is set in a pretty pavilion by a pond. It is also called "Gaggerlasquelle" because it smells slightly of rotten eggs due to its sulfur content - "Gaggerla" means egg in Fürtherisch. Now you follow the reddish colored stream back to the banks of the Pegnitz. At the next bridge you cross the water again and now walk through the spacious city park. You will pass colorful flower beds and a rose garden. At an arm bath you can see the Fontänenhof straight ahead - to the right of it is the Stadtparkcafé. But continue to the right, past the open-air stage, a short distance down the slope. In a left curve you then climb uphill again towards the city. Above you will find a café with a beer garden in the Babylon cinema. You cross a small park and then walk straight through the city center past many pretty old buildings. This is how you come to Rednitz, which you cross immediately. After a few minutes you will reach the clover leaf spring. This is the only one on the way that is not freely accessible. Its water feeds the Fürthermare thermal baths. You walk a short distance along the road until you are back in the meadow. Here you go under the mighty seven-arch bridge and back to the other side of the Rednitz. At the edge of the river valley you hike south. The green meadows to the left and right of the Rednitz divide the city. Where you cross the Main-Danube Canal, it is only a good one and a half kilometers to your destination at the Gustav-Adolf-Quelle. It is also called the Gaggerlasquelle - now you already know what that means. If you want to go back to the city center from here, you can go east to Schwabacher Straße and from there take a bus to Fürth main station.

Fürth is located in Franconia and, as is well known, there is good beer in Franconia. You are really not long on foot on this tour - and that's a good thing, because then you have more time to stop by. Your pleasant walk through Fürth starts at the town hall, where you can easily take the subway or bus. Here you go down the main street a little and then turn right into one of the most popular streets in the city: Gustavstraße. All kinds of inns, cafés and bars gather here - from breakfast to lunch, coffee and cake and even a nightcap, you could spend a whole day here.Passing sandstone buildings and half-timbered houses you reach the Green Market, which is no less dressed up. Then you walk back to the town hall, but walk past it at the back. You follow the pedestrian zone straight ahead until you come to a street. You cross this and find the Grüner Brauhaus at the next intersection. This restaurant is located in the imposing Berolzheimerianum, where the comedy Fürth also has its stage.Schwabacher Straße will continue to take you straight ahead to your last stop: the brewery restaurant Humbser und Freunde. Make yourself comfortable again and treat yourself to a freshly tapped beer as the grand finale - cheers!

In the middle of the city and yet in the green - the Wiesengrund makes it possible. This is what the people of Fürth call the green spaces on the banks of the three major rivers that flow through the city: Pegnitz, Rednitz and Regnitz. The meadow ground is characterized by wide meadows and avenues of trees that provide shade for many paths. Your green circular route through Fürth starts in the Uferstadt on the Pegnitz. You can get here in just a few minutes on foot from the city limits underground station. Children are also happy about this walk, because it leads past two large playgrounds and two mini golf courses. As soon as you step out between the buildings, a beautiful wooden walkway takes you into the green. Down the river you follow the Pegnitz to the spacious city park. You can easily spend a few hours here: Passing an orchard meadow, you come to a large playground, several small lakes and a mini golf course. If you like, you can bring some ping pong bats and play a game. You can also make a detour to the Stadtparkcafé.Then you cross the river and continue to follow its course. Here you will soon pass the next mini golf course, where there is also a beer garden. At the next opportunity you cross the Pegnitz again and walk past the next playground to a wooden platform. Here you can hardly avoid a little tongue twister, because at this place the Pegnitz and Rednitz flow together and become the Regnitz. It continues over a bridge of the Rednitz. On a footpath across the meadow you get back to the city center. The tour ends shortly after the Stadthalle underground station at the Kulturforum.

It is only four kilometers from downtown Fürth to the city forest. So put on your sports shoes and get some fresh air! On the Südstadt side of the main train station, just walk a few meters to the west and you are in the green meadow. Here you follow the course of the Rednitz upstream until you pass under the mighty bridges of the Südwesttangente and the Main-Danube Canal. Now it goes up to the right and you will soon have arrived in the city forest.Right at the beginning you can collect a few vertical meters here if you want. At the Alte Veste there is an observation tower, in which many steps lead you to a wonderful view. A little further on you can see an old quarry in which the sandstone was extracted, which can be seen on many old buildings in Fürth and Nuremberg. On comfortable paths you continue walking under the trees. Then you will come across a reconstructed defense system from the Thirty Years War. The well-known general Wallenstein had his camp here. The forest paths then take you to the train station in Weiherhof, from where you can take the train back to Fürth.

This tour describes a large round in the west of Fürth. It begins on the Wiesengrund near Südstadt. For example, you can take the bus to Neumannstraße or Kaiserstraße here. Or you can take the train to Dambach and get on a little later on the route. Because first you cross the Wiesengrund and then the Dambach district. Here you will meet the Main-Danube Canal, which will accompany you about half of the way. You hike along its bank, nice and smooth. You pass several more rural districts of Fürth and watch the goings on on the water. After several relaxing kilometers by the water, you will reach the solar mountain, from which you have a wonderful view. Then you descend to the east. Directly behind the bridge over the Regnitz, turn right and follow its bank upstream to the cemetery, where the Pegnitz and Rednitz flow together to form the Regnitz. You can take a closer look at that right away. Then you follow the banks of the Rednitz a short distance and go uphill to the Green Market, where you can end your hike with a cozy stop. The Green Market is right between the Stadthalle and City Hall underground stations.

This short route is particularly suitable for families as it passes playgrounds and other places that are interesting for children. The first stop is the mini golf course on the banks of the Pegnitz, where parents can make themselves comfortable in the beer garden right next door. You can get here on foot from the Rathaus subway station, for example. From there you follow the course of the Pegnitz upstream to the city park, where a large playground and a lawn await you. There is also a mini golf course here. You walk through the city park back to the center, where the paradise fountain, which is especially popular with children, awaits you. The little ones can romp around to their heart's content on the fantastic creatures between the water fountains. Then it's not far to the Fürth cinema. Here you can check what is on the program later. Finally, an underpass takes you to the southern part of the city, where a final playground awaits you in a park.

Fürth is pretty green. There are some hidden corners in the Wiesengrund and in the city park that not everyone is familiar with. This tour takes you to the “Green Hidden Places” of Fürth. Perhaps you would like to read something and take a picnic with you to enjoy the green spots of the city even more. The route starts at the Espan spring, which is like a small temple by a pond. For example, you can easily get here on foot from the Stadtbegrenzer underground station. We continue on the banks of the Pegnitz, where a beautiful wooden walkway leads you through water, trees and bushes to a headland in a loop of the Pegnitz. The sand that leads into the water here has given this place the name "beach". Just like at the sea, you can make yourself comfortable here and cool your feet in the water. We continue through the city park. Here you will discover the school garden, in which all sorts of different plants - from tomatoes to roses to palm trees - grow. Then you make your way through the city center. The park on Fürther Freiheit is a bright green spot here, but otherwise the yellowish tones of the sandstone predominate. At the Rednitz it will be green again. Stroll along the promenade between gardens and the river. At the cultural site on Badstrasse there is a café with seats in the secluded garden. Directly in front of it, stone steps lead to the water. Here you can hang your feet in the cool river. At the next bridge you cross the Rednitz and you will soon reach an idyllic pond. Here you can take a break before the last part of the route. Comfortable paths across meadows finally bring you to the point where the Rednitz and Pegnitz flow together to form the Regnitz. You can easily get back to the city center by following the Rednitz upstream.
