When you only have the weekend, but feel like going on a holiday... this trip might be exactly what you are looking for. Get in your car on a Saturday morning and be back home for diner the day after. At only a two hours drive from Arnhem (Netherlands) you'll find the lovely historic town of Arnsberg, at the borders of the beautiful Sauerland National Park in Germany. We parked our car at the local tennis club and set off on a small bikepacking expedition into the forests and hills of Sauerland. While wildcamping is forbidden in Germany, creating a bivy spot for yourself is tolerated in the Sauerland area. With this in mind we set off to the beautifully located 'Osstenstein Hütte'. The Ossenstein Hütte is a shelter in the middle of nowhere, and for us a great place to spend the night. Without riding too many kilometers, we saw a lot of beautiful places, climbed a lot of tough climbs, had some amazing views and enjoyed a couple of great local singletracks.
Upon returning to our car day, we felt like we had been gone for days.
The perfect quick escape and mini-bikepacking adventure.
The routes of day one and two, as well as some of my personal highlights can be found and used in this Komoot collection.Erwin

First day of the mini-bikepacking excursion I did with Carly in Sauerland. The ride took us from the quiet parking space at the Arnsberg tennisclub, up to the Ossenstein Hütte, a forest shelter perfect for a nice bivy.

The ride might be only 52 km, but the ride is rough at parts, hilly all the time. Some

  4. Gravel roads through the fields

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Tired of asphalt? This is your perfect escape to through forest and fields. Nice to ride gravel and forest double track, slightly rolling and winding with nice views along the way.

  5. Geimkeweg Gravel Climb through fields

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Nice slow gravel climb (or descent when riding west) through fields. Can be muddy after rain.

  6. Exactly what it says... nice trail through the woods, but there are many of those here. Nothing too special, just a nice ride :-)

  7. Italian restaurant Calabria (Pizza)

    Mountain Biking Highlight

Italian restaurant ran by real Italian people. The pizza's are great and the price is OK. Great place for a refuel during or after your bike ride.

  8. Rolsberg, short and steep dirt-climb

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Great little challenge up the steep Rolsberg climb. Starting with roughed up asphalt, but soon after you're looking at rough forest track / loose rocky road. Definitely doable on mountainbikes and gravelbikes with enough gearing.

  9. Ausblickspunkt

    Mountain Biking Highlight

I've tried to get the mentioned wind turbines on the picture. :-)

  10. Ossenstein Hütte

    Mountain Biking Highlight

Great little hut to sit for a short brake, hide from bad weather or maybe even sleep for the night bivy-style (which is tolerated in these parts). There's also a nice rock sticking out of the hill next to the hut (Lion King style) for a nice view and Simba moment.

Day 2 of our quick Sauerland bikepacking getaway.

After waking up in the Ossenstein Hütte, a shelter from bad weather and also great bivy spot, we made our way back north to Arnsberg where we parked our car at the local tennisclub.

This ride is more easy than the day before. More downhill and a lot less

  13. Schöner Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight

A nice trail that I would like to take with me when heading towards Stockum or to the chapel above. The path around the chapel ends at the entrance to this trail. So you can do a nice trail round here.

  14. Pumptrack Stockum

    Mountain Biking Highlight

Great little local pumptrack playfield at the village of Stockum. Nothing too technical, but great for a bit of fun along your ride!

  15. Toller Blick...

    Mountain Biking Highlight

You should definitely have driven parallel to the Höhenweg.
