When the Romans arrived in this area of Germany, they found a dense, almost impenetrable forest. Today, a well-developed network of paths is waiting for you to fully discover everything this region has to offer. These hikes show you just how beautiful and diverse the central Black Forest is. You’ll see historic castles, ruins and palaces, hike through fairytale old towns with half-timbered flair and enjoy fabulous 360-degree panoramas – with a bit of luck, even as far as the Alps.
Each little town has its own charm and story to tell. The Black Forest people are proud of their roots and traditions; that's why in many towns you'll find fascinating museums explaining more about traditional costumes, crafts or life in the region.
The hiking trails lead you down into romantic valleys and up to spectacular vantage points. This topography is quintessential Black Forest: densely forested mountains with their steep valleys. The Black Forest Nature Park is working hard to preserve this landscape. Whereas in the past many trees were cleared for agriculture, today only about one third of the nature park is agricultural land. Forestation is increasing again and in some communities the proportion of forest is more than 90 percent. As a result, the Black Forest Nature Park Central/North has grown to become one of the largest nature parks in Germany.
All seven hikes are circular routes designed for one day and have varying lengths – just pick the one that suits you best. The villages are accessible by public transport and almost all have their own railway station. The infrastructure in the Black Forest is very well developed thanks to increasing tourism. The same applies to the condition and signposting of the hiking trails.
