    Rothenbourg (Rothenburg)

    Hiking Highlight

I visited Rothenburg (north of Philippsbourg) as a pure castle tour in one day together with the castle ruins Wasigenstein, Luetzelhardt and Waldeck.

There are not many remains of a castle to see and it is only worthwhile for hikers who, like me, want to visit all the castles and castle ruins in the Northern Vosges. The upper castle is not accessible,

But here I found a drone image:

    Château du Wasigenstein

    Hiking Highlight

The castle is worth seeing and together with the Petit Arnsbourg, Blumenstein and the Rocher des Tziganes a great castle tour. The upper castle can be reached via a steep staircase, whose steps are fairly worn.

    Château du Hohenfels

    Hiking Highlight

    A still worth seeing ruin

    Chateau de Schoeneck

    Hiking Highlight

The reconstruction is in full swing here, the stones of the former walls are piled up everywhere, but next to nothing is cordoned off and you can explore the whole castle. This sometimes requires a bold big step, since one or the other level is missing, but rewards directly with further building parts that stimulate the imagination.

    Burgruine Wineck

    Hiking Highlight

There is not much left to see of the Wineck castle ruins (Windeck). A high wall and the upper castle, which you can only climb. The short tour to the Wineck should be combined with a visit to one or more of the following castle ruins:
    Chateau Schoeneck
    Chateau Hohenfels (Dambacher Castle)
    Watchtower and Klein-Arnsberg ruins
Old Windstein and New Windstein ruins
    Ruin Luetzelhardt
So you can visit several castle ruins comfortably in one day.

Altwindstein consists of two independent plants, which lie on a common, in north-south direction about 160 meters long rock ridge and are separated by an artificially extended, 25 meters long incision.
The southern complex, also known as the front castle, towers above a now no longer accessible, about 20 meters high vertical tower rocks. The front part can not be visited. The rear castle is only suitable for experienced climbers and can only be visited by them.

There are still extensive ruins. So are still the (not walkable) residential tower of the upper castle with the shield wall and building remains of the lower castle. In contrast to the Vieux Windstein, this castle is still easy to visit.

    Chateau de Wasenbourg

    Hiking Highlight

The Château du Wasenbourg, like most castles in Alsace, has a varied history. Like most castles, it was attacked and conquered, sold and mortgaged several times. And then quickly visited by Goethe (Wikipedia). The castle is only a ruined castle, from which the outer walls stand. But from the top there is a nice view.

Very picturesque castle ruin from the 12th century, which was built on a narrow sandstone rock.
Short path through the forest with a slight increase from the trail parking lot.
    Excellent all-round view.
