Waking up at dawn in a mountain hut, hiking over mountain meadows in the tender blue of the new day, and then having a breathtaking panorama from the summit over the glistening water of Lake Wolfgang—this awaits you on the only two-year-old BergeSeen Trail in the Salzkammergut.
The Salzkammergut has a varied landscape to offer: In the north the hilly foothills of the Alps, large lakes, quiet valleys, the rocky peaks of the Salzkammergut mountains and the impressive karst landscapes of the Dachstein massif and the Dead Mountains. On 23 daily stages and a distance of over 350 kilometers you walk from Gmunden from lake to lake, over mountain pastures and along thundering mountain streams. The tour takes you along the glaciated mountains of the Dachstein massif and at the foot of the Höllengebirge and over the karst plateau of the Dead Mountains. The well signposted path mostly runs along good hiking trails and only a few rocky passages have to be crossed on the way. The stages end in small villages, lonely inns and wildly romantic mountain huts. Thanks to the well-developed bus network, you can also put together your favourite stages as a weekend tour and shorten the ascents with cable cars or hut taxis.
But if the mountains are calling you, you can adapt the long-distance hike with the Alpine variants according to your wishes. The five variants lead you through the mountains of the Höllengebirge, the Dachstein massif and the Dead Mountains. The Alpine sections are especially suitable for experienced mountain hikers and you can plan them in place of certain stages of the main route on your personal hike. In addition, there are three regional variations on which you can explore the hills and lakes of the foothills of the Alps in detail. Both the Regional Variations and the Alpine stages are perfectly suited as an independent tour for a long weekend due to their length.
Just put together your personal tour and hike through the Salzkammergut on the BergeSeen Trail.
The starting point of the BergeSeen Trail is in the beautiful center of Gmunden. You can easily reach it by train: first to Attnang Puchheim and from there to Gmunden. It goes along the shores of the Traunsee, through forests and through the romantic forest gorge of the Stücklbachgraben. The destination…
Stage 2 of the BergeSeen Trail spoils you with three beautiful mountain lakes. From the starting point, the “Windlegern” inn, you continue over the Vorderen Langbathsee to the Hinteren Langbarthsee. You will marvel at him first. The next lake on your list is Taferlklaussee. Today's destination is Steinbach am Attersee.
Get recommendations on the best single tracks, peaks, & plenty of other exciting outdoor places.
Stage 3 of the BergeSeen Trail takes you from Steinbach am Attersee to the famous St. Wolfgang. In easy ups and downs, accompanied by beautiful views of the Attersee, it goes through a shady high forest to Weißenbach. The trail climbs up to the Schwarzensee and then down to the stage destination St. Wolfgang.
With its quite a few meters in altitude, stage 4 looks like a whole lot of work. So first of all: Using the cog railway to the Schafbergalm (schafbergbahn.at) can save you a bit of time and a lot of ascent. From the Schafbergalm you then go down to the stage destination St. Gilgen with a wonderful view.
The fifth stage starts in St. Gilgen and it spoils you on the way with what is probably the most beautiful panoramic view over the Mondsee. In addition, it goes up to the Almkogel - if you get up early, you will also be served an amazing sunrise in addition to the panorama. Then it goes downhill towards…
Stage 5 of your BergeSeen Trail adventure takes you from Mondsee to Fuschl am See. And compared to yesterday's tour, today's ten kilometers seem almost like a walk. A moderately steep path leads you to Wartenfels, where you can take a lunch break in the rustic, cozy Forsthaus Wartenfels. This is followed…
The seventh stage takes you from Fuschl am See to Faistenau - and the striking Schober will be your faithful companion. First you hike along the southern shore of Lake Fuschl and then you go over the Filbling, which not only offers a wonderful view of the entire region, but also a detour to its mountain…
The eighth stage allows you to take it easy with a distance of almost twelve kilometers and an altitude difference of less than 200 meters. The route leads you through the valley of the Tauglbach, past the romantic Hintersee. The destination of the hike is Hintersee, around five kilometers from the eponymous body of water.
A special experience awaits you today: the seventh stage takes you up to the Postalm, a beautiful alpine pasture with beautiful nature and nice huts. But let's start in Hintersee. In addition to other rustic alpine pastures along the way, you can also look forward to the summit climb to the Hohe Zinken.
Stage 8 of the BergeSeen Trail is relatively easy with its eleven and a half kilometers. From yesterday's idyllic stage destination, the Postalm, you walk across endless alpine meadows, the extensive Thoralmsattel and along the high moor "Blinklingmoos" to the stage destination Strobl, at the eastern end of Lake Wolfgang.
As part of stage 9 of the BergeSeen Trail, you will hike from the charming Strobl to the traditional Bad Ischl. From the Strobler center it goes along the lakeshore promenade and over forest and hiking trails to Lake Nussensee - half time of your hike. The idyllic Elisabeth-Waldweg finally leads you…
On the twelfth stage it gets really mountainous again. From Bad Ischl you go up to the 1,461 meter Hohe Feuerkogel, where the rustic Katrinalm is also located. The Katrin hiking trail of the same name then meanders down into the valley of the Traun and leads you to cozy Bad Goisern, today's destination.
The 13th stage spoils you with lush alpine meadows, rustic huts and wide panoramic views. From Bad Goisern, the starting point of the stage, you first hike gently, then more heartily up through mountain forests. The last part to the Goiserer Hütte, the highest point of the tour, takes you in serpentines…
From Gosau, the 14th stage takes you gently over forest paths and alpine meadows gently uphill towards the Dachstein Mountains - along the way there are always fantastic views of the glacier. You reach the highest point at the Gablonzer Hütte, before going downhill past the Vorderen Gosausee and towards…
Hallstatt is one of the most visited cities in Austria. You have probably seen the picture with the traditional houses by the water a few times. Today Hallstatt is also the destination of your tour. The stage begins in Gosau. On the way to Hallstatt you cross the Löckernmoos, walk over mountain pastures…
Stage 13 of the BergeSeen Trail begins with a boat trip, by means of which you cross Lake Hallstatt once to get off on the other side at the train station (hallstattschifffahrt.at). From there, the Koppentraun accompanies you through the picturesque Koppental. The mountains loom high on both sides of…
Leaving the beautiful alleys of Bad Aussee is definitely not easy. But today your adventure continues and this much can be revealed: beautiful, traditional places are far from over.
Among other things, it goes to the Ödensee, a real natural treasure under the slopes of the Dachstein Mountains. In addition…
Stage 15 takes you from Bad Mitterndorf up to the idyllic Tauplitzalm. The ascent is only at the end today - in Bad Mitterndorf you start off comfortably and flat. The Grimmingweg, Further-Auenweg and Furtherleitenweg lead you to Tauplitz and thus to the valley station of the Tauplitzalm chair lift…
Nature, water and even more nature await you on stage 16 of your BergeSeen adventure. It starts practically in front of the door of your night quarters on Tauplitzsee, the first beautiful body of water that you will encounter today. More picturesque mountain lakes along the route: Großsee and the small…
As beautiful as Gößl is - today it goes up high and into the middle of the rocky landscape of the Dead Mountains. You reach the "Draußengatterl", a rocky narrow point with a wonderful view, via forest paths and hiking trails. On your way to the stage destination Albert-Appelhaus, you go over narrow hiking…
