In this Collection, shortcuts are allowed. We present 10 mountain railways in Chiemgau that take you quickly and comfortably up to vantage points and the start of hikes in the Chiemgau mountains. The Chiemgau’s Alpine foothills in Upper Bavaria in Germany are a beautiful area to discover. Keep your camera on hand as you climb up the mountainside in a cable car – fantastic mountain panoramas await.

The 10 mountain railways in the Inn Valley, the Chiemgau, and the district of Berchtesgadener Land allow you to reach lofty heights without working up a sweat. In this Collection, we present day hikes featuring each cable car ranging from family-friendly loops to exhilarating summit hikes. Afterward, you can either walk back down into the valley or take the cable car. On every route, there are numerous opportunities to stop for refreshments so you won’t go hungry on your hikes.

The routes in this Collection offer something for everyone, both young and old. Young hikers will especially enjoy the Hocheck Legend Trail and the Staffen Mountain Forest Adventure Trail. The Bründling Alm circular route takes you through a rocky canyon whilst the Kampen Forest Panorama Trail lives up to its name with panoramic views over the Chiemsee. You can climb three peaks in just two and a half hours on the Predigtstuhl route thanks to the cable car. You can discover fascinating sculptures on the Rauschenberg whilst the Triassic Park in the Steinplatte region takes you back to the time of the dinosaurs. The Unternberg summit hike is ideal for all ages; even small children can reach the top as it’s only a short distance from the cable car station. The famous Wendelstein mountain also has a lot to discover and the countless huts around the Winklmoosalm will keep foodies happy.

    The Sagenweg is a relaxed hike for the whole family and starts at the mountain station of the Hocheck mountain railway. From Oberaudorf you gondola up to the mountain and can already enjoy wonderful views while driving.At the starting point there is a forest spirit with a saga book on which the child emperor tells the story of the Brno stone dwarfs. From there you hike slightly uphill towards Brünnstein, where you will first encounter a fairytale-like film game and later the hearty dwarf house. Then it goes back to the mountain station and past the animal enclosure there to the mountain restaurant Hocheck.Then the path gently descends. At the other stations of the Sagenweg you can learn stories and myths from the area and little hikers can enjoy the various play options. The goal of the hike is the middle station of the Hocheck mountain railway, from which you can either take the lift, walk or the summer toboggan run back to the valley.

    After the ascent to the middle station with the Hochfelln cable car, this tour starts with wonderful views of the idyllic Bründling Alm. In front of the mighty peaks of the Hochfelln and Rötelwandkopf, rustic huts nestle into the alpine meadows. Three of them are managed and invite you to a snack. Strengthened you follow the Hochfellnweg downhill through the forest and can enjoy the wonderfully fresh forest air.A particularly beautiful section awaits you along the Black Ache: For millions of years, the stream has carved a canyon into the rock, in which it is nice and cool even in summer. When you arrive in the valley, you come across the White Achen, which you follow to the valley station of the Hochfelln cable car. On the way to your destination you can still visit the interesting Maxhütte Museum. The Mühlwinkler Hof is located directly at the valley station, where you can satisfy your hunger at the end of the tour.

    After you have comfortably covered the first vertical meters with the Hochplatten double chairlift from Niedernfels, the circular route starts at the mountain station. The family-friendly prices of the Hochplattenbahn are particularly attractive: the second and all other children in a family travel free of charge, children up to five years are generally free.On the hike there are 20 stations where you can learn a lot about nature. In addition to a large silhouette wall, you will find play huts, sound boards and various information boards along the way. In the beginning it goes past idyllic mountain huts up into the forest. If you need a break, there are hanging chairs, benches or the relax hill. At the highest point of the circular hike you can expect a fantastic view of Lake Chiemsee and the Achental.You then hike in an arc around the summit of the Kleinstaffen on shady paths and after three kilometers you meet again on the wide alpine meadows, which take you back to the starting point. You can satisfy your hunger in the cozy Staffn-Alm. You can go back to the valley on foot or with the Hochplattenbahn.

    At the beginning of this tour you take the Kampenwandbahn from Hohenaschau up to the Sonnen Alm: From the mountain station, go uphill on path number 20 to the devotional cross, where you can enjoy a fantastic panorama.After you have admired the view of the Chiemsee with its islands, you hike on to the Staffelstein, a striking rock formation.     After you have relaxed taken the cable car from Bad Reichenhall up to the Predigtstuhl, the circular route starts at the mountain station. You can climb the first summit of this wonderful hike just a few minutes' walk away: the Berchtesgadener Land with a view of the Chiemgau is at your feet on the 1,613-meter-high summit of the Predigtstuhl. With a view of Hochstaufen, Untersberg and Watzmann it goes down into the Schlegelmulde, where the rustic Schlegelalm invites you to take a break.This is followed by a demanding zigzag climb up to the Hochschlegel, on which there is a wooden summit cross. From the second summit of this hike, the path leads through densely overgrown mountain pine fields to the third highlight, the Karkopf (1738 m). A fantastic mountain panorama awaits you even on the highest peak of the entire Latten Mountains.After you have entered the summit book, you hike through the breathtaking landscape back to the mountain station of the Predigtstuhlbahn. A stop at the nostalgic mountain restaurant, which is widely known for its fine cuisine, is recommended there. From the glazed viewing terrace you have a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains and, in ideal weather, you can even see Lake Chiemsee in the distance. Afterwards you hover relaxed in only eight and a half minutes back to the valley to Bad Reichenhall.

    Your hike begins and ends at the valley station of the Rauschbergbahn, where there is an inn and a hotel. Already during the ascent with the gondola you can enjoy wide views of the mighty rock faces and the valley. Before you start you can marvel at the sculpture "The Sky Climber" from the viewing terrace.Then you hike over the summit of the Rauschberg and past the Rauschberghaus to the east. After a short stretch, the stream flows into the Weißen Traun, which accompanies you through the forest. When you reach the shimmering green Taubensee, you are almost at the destination of your hike - because the valley station of the Rauschbergbahn, your starting point, is on the other bank.

    Already while driving the gondola from Waidring to the starting point of your circular hike, you can enjoy fantastic views. Once at the top, you follow the Triassic Trail through Triassic Park, which takes you back to the time of the dinosaurs. With a view of the surrounding mountains, you will discover models of primeval lizards and interesting facts about their lives.A unique highlight is the Steinplatte viewing platform, which hovers above the abyss in the form of a fan coral. From there it is only a few steps to the starting point, where you can stop at the Berghaus Kammerkör or the Gasthaus Panorama Tenne. You can take the gondola lift or walk back down to Waidring.

    Fresh mountain air blows your nose as you ascend with the chairlift: from the valley station at 740 meters, you can easily climb up to 1,425 meters. Once at the top, a family-friendly high-altitude hiking area awaits you with a wonderful 360-degree panoramic view from the Central Alps to Lake Chiemsee. You can try delicious cheese from their milk in the Boider Kaser hut.Afterwards you walk on a gravel path towards the valley and come across another, worthwhile refreshment stop - the rustic Raffner Alm seems to have sprung from a hiking guide. In front of the wooden hut you can have a good break and eat. Finally, there are only a few minutes' walk to the valley station of the Unternberglift.

From Osterhofen you take the cable car and from Brannenburg take the train up to the mountain. You walk clockwise past the broadcasting building of the Bavarian Radio and climb in serpentines to the summit. The ascent is characterized not only by fantastic views, but also by interesting display boards.Once at the top, a unique panorama, a summit cross and the university observatory await you. From the highest point of the hike at 1,838 meters, the route continues on partly narrow and secured paths towards the eastern summit. Adventure stations such as the trough couch, the stone sliding area and the walkable weather hole illustrate the geological connections.With a view of Lake Chiemsee and Chiemgau you get back to the mountain station, where you can take a detour to the striking Wendelsteinkircherl. A delicious snack and a cool beer are served on the large terrace of the Wendelsteinhaus.

Strengthened you leave the alpine meadows and dive into the forest - on a gently rising path you hike across the border to Austria.Past the Mösererstube, you continue through alpine forest, past shimmering ponds and back to Germany. After almost seven kilometers you will reach the starting point of this hike and have the opportunity to strengthen yourself in one of the huts.
