Frankfurt is a multifaceted city – it’s lively, full of culture, and a transport hub for airlines, railways, and road traffic. But what about bicycles? The city of skyscrapers is not necessarily known as a road biking region. But we — Moritz and Max from FOCUS Bikes — will show you great routes to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city on your road bike, discover the region and admire the skyline from a safe distance. There are plenty of great circular routes around Frankfurt — let's get started!

When you think of Frankfurt and cycling, the Taunus Mountains probably come to mind. Of course, the Taunus also feature in some of our routes with plenty of climbs for you. We’ve also included a route through the mountains based on the semi-classic annual Eschborn-Frankfurt cycling race. We’ve replaced the official route’s motorway sections with quieter stretches along regular roads. You’ll also find a few hilly routes to the east of the Main River and two easier routes to the west, including fast, paved cycle paths through forests and open fields. We also include one very flat circular, the short Main loop, which you can try to complete in under one hour.

Some people focus so much on the route while racing that they don't notice the highlights to the left and right of the road. Sure - for a best-time workout, your head should be lowered as much as possible. But this round is not just about speed, but about an excursion into the world of castles and palaces south of Frankfurt. But don't worry, the old castle owners have cut a lot of straight paths through the forest so that you can heat properly in between. If you don't like cycling out of the city, you can take the train to Niederrad. Then it goes over Sachsenhausen into the forest. This is where the fine gentlemen met in the Renaissance for hunting and left impressive castles. Together with great roads, this results in a wonderful and, above all, varied circuit.

Just escape the big city and go out into the country. Who would have thought that you could cycle through almost endless wheat fields at the gates of Frankfurt? With the S-Bahn you can be in Groß Karben in under half an hour and get started straight away.To warm up, you cycle slightly uphill through the fields and come to a beautiful forest area, where it goes a few kilometers uphill. Sometimes on small roads, sometimes on country lanes you cycle through the forest, on open fields and along charming rivers. And of course you will also find a nice café in between in pretty, small towns along the route.Especially the last part along the Nidda is fantastic. You certainly didn't expect so much idyll so close to Mainhatten.

A great tour awaits you to stay on the ground. Because on this lap you hardly do any vertical meters, the planes that you can observe on the way are responsible for the high flights. But not only tarpaulin spotters get their money's worth: great routes along the river and in the forest await you between the Main and Mönchbruch. From Frankfurt you cycle along the river Main down to Kelsterbach. Then the airport feeling begins: You drive through a tunnel under one runway and get straight to the next. There you can watch the huge machines take off and land. You return to the Main through the forest and the Mönchbruch nature reserve. A great contrast to aircraft noise and skyscrapers. You cycle along the Main back to Frankfurt, where the skyline welcomes you again.

Pretty 100-kilometer-1,000-meter climb at the gates of Frankfurt. With the S-Bahn you are in less than half an hour in Groß Karben and start your tour through an idyllic landscape. You cycle a lot through nature on wonderfully paved slopes. What a relaxation compared to the big city bustle. To get the right pulse, start with a small hill. However, it only gets really uphill later and then not really steep. Nevertheless, you get to your 1,000 vertical meters during the day.The old Oberwaldbahn route, which has been converted into a cycle path, is particularly beautiful to drive. Even one or the other piece through the forest provides variety on this great round.

If you need some exercise after work or during your lunch break, just grab your racing bike. You can plan to run the 35 kilometers in an hour, but that's not the goal of this little lap. Rather, you can enjoy the view of the water while doing something for your fitness. From Frankfurt it goes via Offenbach to shortly before Hanau to the lock in Mühlheim. A lot of nature awaits you on the way, ideal for relaxing and forgetting everyday life. If you start in the late afternoon, you will drive towards the evening sun from the lock. The setting sun behind the skyscrapers with the river in the foreground is a unique mood in Germany.

    Moritz - Brand Manager
“Frankfurt-Eschborn (around the Henninger Turm) is a classic for everyone! It was a tough race. The start was mega. What could be better than breaking through the Frankfurt skyscrapers when the streets are closed? The Feldberg is of course a classic in itself and has a very pleasant slope. It can be pressed up comfortably. After that I had a hard time and hardly got what to eat. Either descents at high speed or straight back into the counter climb. The right final boss is the Mammolshainer Stich with its up to 25%. Because of the professional race, there is a lot going on here that gives you the last push. ”
Please note that this tour does not correspond to 100 percent of the racetrack, as the highway is closed for the race. The rest is original and you can use this route to prepare yourself well for the tour.
