The ten most beautiful hiking trails through Saarland in Germany
Gloger/Tourismus Zentrale Saarland GmbH
Untouched nature, romantic forests, and historical sites – Saarland is a wonderfully varied hiking region. Bordering Luxembourg and France, Saarland may be one of the smallest German states, but it has a huge variety of hiking trails. In this Collection, we’ve put together ten of the most beautiful routes which showcase Saarland’s diversity.
Each hike can be completed in a day, making it convenient to explore the region in your free time. The routes vary in difficulty, although they are mostly fairly relaxed rambles that are ideal for the whole family.
Saarland’s small size makes it convenient to reach the hikes without spending hours driving. Within around 30 miles (50 km) of the state capital Saarbrücken, you can travel back in time and follow in the footsteps of nobility on the Schlossberg near the town of Homburg, follow along the popular Jakobsweg, and venture into thick forests. All of the hikes follow excellent paths where beautiful views over Saarland and beyond the borders are guaranteed. When you are ready for a break, you’ll find plenty of restaurants and cafes en route.
Hikes through Saarland help you to forget your everyday stress and unwind in green nature. The Saarland may be small in terms of area, but its hiking possibilities are endless.

Off to the jungle! This eight kilometer circular hike shows you why the forest in the Steinbach and Netzbach valleys is so wonderfully original and wild. You can explore the protected area on beautiful hiking trails and observe how nature develops when humans can make it easy. The starting point of the jungle tour is at the Forsthaus Neuhaus, north of Saarbrücken.
The municipality of Perl is located in the border triangle of Germany, Luxembourg and France and is known for its viticulture. But not only grapes grow on the limestone soils, 17 wild orchid species also feel at home in the sun-drenched soil. On this nine-kilometer circular hike, you wander through this beautiful landscape with its lush flora and enjoy wonderful views.
How about some pilgrim feeling? On this hike from Hornbach Monastery to Medelsheim, you follow the southern route of the Jakobsweg through the Saarland for almost 15 kilometers - it doesn't always have to be the great pilgrimage to Spain. To get in the right mood for the tour, you can draw peace and strength in the Hornbach Monastery, the starting point of the hike.
