The fox was the soul of a blaspheming miller. Before his sudden death, he said the words "If i should have anything after death, i was most fond of a fox, i have often thought of it for a long time!"He promptly returned to life as a fox and ran howling and hissing through the forest at night, terrifying the population. It was only when the miller's wife undertook a pilgrimage to Maria Kirchental that the spook came to an end and the fox found peace.
