You may be wondering how you can get into mountain biking in the Netherlands. After all, the country is famous for being almost completely flat and not exactly known for its mountains. This may be true, but there is one exception – the area around Valkenburg. The hilly landscape here offers beautiful and challenging rides for cyclocross riders, road cyclists and E-MTB riders. Indeed, this Dutch cycling mecca even holds annual international cyclocross events. In this Collection, former professional cross-country mountain biker and Dutch champion presents a wonderful bike route through his home turf – welcome to Valkenburg!
Valkenburg is a charming, historical town, surrounded by lush green fields and forests which are perfect for cycling. The region has even hosted the UCI Road World Championships five times and the Tour de France twice. Every year, the Cauberg, a notorious, steep hill just outside of Valkenburg holds an international cyclo-cross event and it was the location of the World Championships in 2018. The area attracts riders of all abilities, not just professionals which is one of the reasons why the Shimano Experience Centre is located in Valkenburg.
From the Shimano Experience Centre, there are hundreds of kilometres of marked trails and a huge network of routes that are perfect for e-mountain bikes. On his Tour, Marc Bouwmeester gives you a small taste of the trails in Valkenburg, leaving you to explore more of the region afterwards.
