Romantic castle ruins, whistling bagpipes, majestic mountains, green landscapes - on the Skye Trail you will experience Scotland's most amazing side. While woolly sheep are your constant companions as you explore this unique island you'll find beautiful bays with turquoise seas, rugged cliffs, majestic basalt columns and traces of bygone eras and ages. You walk along imposing, steep cliffs, through typical Scottish moorland and the highest mountain range in Britain - Scotland up close.

The Skye Trail is an unofficial route that winds for around 130 kilometres (80 miles) from the northern tip of the island to the harbour town of Broadford. There is no signposting and often there is not even a trail, making it an absolute adventure in an epic landscape, but it requires navigation skills and good fitness.

We've prepared the Skye Trail for you in eight exciting stages. On most days you have the possibility to stay under a dry roof in bad weather. However, each stage also offers the most beautiful areas for wild camping. Maybe you will spend the night in one of the rustic Scottish mountain huts, a Bothy.

In addition to the eight main stages, we have prepared two alternative routes if you are looking for a special challenge on the already demanding trail.

We recommend that you allow an extra two days in total for the journey to and from Glasgow as the bus ride to and from the Scottish capital Glasgow takes a few hours. The bus only runs once a day, with a change of bus on the Isle of Skye. You will find the exact details in the stage descriptions.
