The North West of England (from Preston to Penrith and from the Atlantic to Alston) takes in some of the most breathtaking (literally and visually) roads in the UK and possibly the World. We are lucky to have the Lake District National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and the Yorkshire Dales on our patch but also hidden gems like the Forest of Bowland (the oldest AONB in the UK). What these unique landscapes have in common are hills. Lots of them. Steep, stabby, hills. Occasionally reaching gradients of more than 30% and regularly around the 15-20% mark. For every climb there is a stunning view to behold at the top. The roads are near empty too. And the landscapes are vast and empty. Planning your routes becomes essential when it might be 20 miles to the nearest decent refueling stop or urban area (and there'll be a few climbs to get there too!). - Toby CumminsToby's profile - komoot.com/user/530068503661

Tours & Highlights

  • © OSM

    Wast Water and Nether Wasdale

    Road Cycling Highlight

Remote and ever so picturesque. Worth taking the northern road into the Lake from Nether Wasdale and then riding along the Lake before heading back toward Eskdale

    Birker Fell

    Road Cycling Highlight (Segment)

Arguably the best road in the UK you've never heard of. Go and ride it. Immediately.

    Great Dun Fell

    Road Cycling Highlight

The Daddy of UK mountains. 11/10 in Another 100 Greatest Climbs - "England's Ventoux". Careful on the lower slopes as it's easy to burn too much energy there. The last 2 miles of this climb to the highest paved surface in England is on beautiful closed roads. It's savagely steep in places and relentless. The view at the top will either be of nothing past your feet or of the whole world. A MUST for any road cyclist in the Cold Dark North

  • © OSM

A beautiful quiet alternative to the busy A-road on the opposite side of the reservoir. Runs to the west of Thirlmere.

    The Cross o Greet

    Road Cycling Highlight

Possibly our favourite climb in the Cold Dark North - beautiful bathed in sunshine brutal on a wet and windy day - it's never very steep but always testing and rewards you with a brilliant descent down to Tatham Fell and Bentham to the North

    Blea Tarn Descent

    Road Cycling Highlight

One of the best views in the Lakes. A r terrible surface down though. Take care.

    The Heart Shaped Wood

    Road Cycling Highlight

Locals have pondered over the heart shaped wood for decades. Some believe that it is the site of a World War II plane crash, whilst others believe it was planted by a farmer's daughter after her love died. The Heart Shaped Wood is a small wood in the shape of a heart on a hillside of the Lune Valley. Whatever the reason for the curious woods, it has become an icon of Cumbria and a "must see" when visiting the Tebay Gorge.

    The Three Hares

    Road Cycling Highlight

A great spot for cake, coffee, or full breakfasts or lunches - they take bookings for evening meals toooccasionally, but their normal opening hours are Tuesday through to Saturday, 9 - 5. An amazing place.
