Stopping for a break at a quaint brewery or historical beer cellar is often a welcome respite on a hike. In this Collection, we present nine hikes through Franconia and the Upper Palatine in Germany that include a beer stop en route. These regions are famous for their brewing: countless private breweries dedicate themselves to producing liquid gold and serving the highest quality beer and delicacies. And, of course, a cold beer tastes even better after a few miles of hiking through the countryside.
All of the hikes in this Collection can be reached with the VGN so you can enjoy your beer without having to drive. The Gräfenberg train, Trubachtal Valley Express, and other VGN leisures lines allow you to enjoy stress-free hiking from May to November. Some buses even have a bike trailer if you prefer to cycle through the region. The lines take you quickly and conveniently to and from our beer hikes, stopping at beautiful places on the way.
The varied routes in this Collection have plenty of insider tips about the region. You can choose between hiking classics such as the ‘5 Seidla Steig’, a ramble through the Franconian Lake District, or learn about Neumarkter beer.
To ensure that all leisure-seekers reach their destination safely during the current Coronavirus crisis, please bear in mind the following when travelling in VGN transport:
- Keep a sufficient distance from fellow passengers at stations and on buses and trains.
- Wear a face mask inside the bus and train.
- The customer service centre opening hours are currently limited.
- Bus drivers will not sell tickets. Please buy your tickets in advance via the app, at a ticket machine, or online.

This beautiful route takes you directly past Walberla to some places that make hiking in Franconian Switzerland particularly pleasant: Distilleries and breweries. With a few palate-friendly stops along the way, things are particularly lively. You will also roam the orchards, which are the origin of so many schnapps. It is particularly beautiful here during the cherry blossom season in April and also in autumn.
Through shady forests, this hike in the Bamberger hinterland leads from the Baunachtal valley over the eastern Haßberge foothills down to the Itztal valley, then back up to the ridges of the Kraiberges - views over to Schloss Banz and Vierzehnheiligen included. From the 330-meter-high vantage point "Kraiberg-Blick" the view then opens into the Main valley and over to Bamberg. Several brewery inns ensure that thirsty throats do not stay dry.
