Dachstein hut loop: find your favorite cabin on the Dachstein massif

Hiking Collection by

The Dachstein hut-to-hut loop takes you on four spectacular hikes and four idyllic huts: the Austriahütte, the Guttenberghaus, the Adamekhütte and the Simonyhütte. Grandiose views, peaceful nature and a few meters of climbing await.

The best thing about this hike through the fantastic Dachstein mountains is that, at the end of each day, you don't have to descend back down into the valley. Instead, you can stay and indulge in the undisturbed mountain landscapes for a while longer.

Gravel paths that are steep in places with a rope for support and more leisurely high plateau sections will lead you from one hut to the next, to delicious meals and from sunset to sunset again and again. You need to bring along your weatherproof clothes, good shoes and sure-footedness. Poles can also make the ascents and descents much easier. Don’t forget to bring enough water with you, as the sun is strong at high altitudes and it can get hot, especially during the summer. Last but not least, it is also important to reserve a bed in the mountain cabins in advance.

Now, nothing stands between you and your next mountain hut adventure. You have our checklist, now you’re only missing a date in your calendar.

You begin your hut tour at the Austriahütte, a spacious Alpine Club hut at the foot of the Dachstein. Buses run regularly from the station in Schladming to the valley station of the Dachstein Glacier Cable Car. From here it is only about 30 minutes to the cottage.Tip: If you arrive the day before your planned hiking start, you have time to explore the highest museum of Styria, which is located directly in the hut. The view from the hut on the Dachsteinsüdwand and Bischofsmütze is terrific. But do not let yourself be spellbound for too long. There is a decent rise in front of you. In addition, the first section of your tour - the way to Edelgries - is south-facing. So you should start early enough. But that leaves you more time on the sunny terrace of the Guttenberghaus. From the Austriahütte you follow the marked path in the direction of Edelgrieshöhe, on which you reach a steep, partially rope-protected scree field. Behind a few impressive peaks and accompanied by a magnificent backdrop, you will continue to hike until you finally reach the 2,361 meter high Gruberscharte between Eselstein and high Rams. From here you can already see it, after a slight descent you have also reached it: the Guttenberghaus. And thus the goal of your first successfully completed stage.

On the second day of your Dachsteinhüttentour you go - at least for the most part - rather comfortably through the pines on the Dachstein plateau. The over six-hour mountain tour not only gives you great views, but leads you to a cabin known for its unique atmosphere and unbeatable vision. But first things first.Wake up in the Guttenberghaus and strengthened by a breakfast break you in the direction of Feisterscharte. With its proud 2,198 meters reveals itself up here once again an unrestricted view of your yesterday night quarters and the surrounding mountains.Walk across the lush green landscape of the plateau to the Gjaidalm. And at this point it can really be worthwhile to take a short break. The recently refurbished refuge is known for the delights it prepares for its guests. If you eventually decide to move on, the path leads you through the so-called Bärengrube and once again past a rest area with an unobstructed view of the Dachstein. Then you reach already today's stage goal: the Simonyhütte.
