Hiking in Bavaria’s Upper Palatinate Forest – unspoilt forests & green hills
© Oberpfälzer Wald
Lonely, unspoilt forests, glistening brooks, winding rivers, and wide views over wooded hills — welcome to Bavaria's wild north, the Upper Palatinate Forest. Between the town of Marktredwitz in the north and Regensburg in the south, you can explore endless forests, romantic castle ruins and friendly little towns and villages on a network of more than 400 official hiking trails. We took to the trails ourselves and present six of our favourite routes here.
The routes in this Collection showcase the beautiful scenery and impressive nature in the region, as well as the flora and fauna which grows in the area. A brand new “Nature-Navi” feature allows you to use a digital hiking map (visit oberpfaelzerwald.de/natur-navi), plan your route, and head off adventuring. Along the trails, there are 100 QR codes revealing information about the nature when you scan them with your phone. An audio guide also explains interesting facts about the areas such as the origin of rock formations, the history of huge castle ruins, and about life along the babbling brooks.
On the “Nature-Navi”, you can also find all official hiking trails in the Upper Palatinate Forest. Browse through the selection, download the GPX track and you are ready to go on tour with komoot. You will also find plenty of information on places to stop for refreshments, sights and events. If you plan to stay for several days, the information on accommodation will be particularly helpful. You can put your favourites on your personal digital notepad to access them later or during the hike.

Deep forests and wide views: on the small rock hike you get an insight into the beauty of the Steinwald nature park. Be it Zipfeltannenfelsen, Reiseneggerfelsen or Räuberfelsen - rugged-chunky rock formations are the hallmark of the stone forest. Under no circumstances should you miss the ascent to the Saubadfelsen: the viewing platform literally puts the stone forest at your feet and gives you a view of the dense tree tops.By the way - the nature park is small, but still quite wild: lots of red deer, but also rare animals such as the lynx or the hawk owl are at home here again.Tip: You can also find this tour in the Oberpfälzer Wald nature navigation system oberpfaelzerwald.de/natur-navi with lots of additional information, from natural knowledge to refreshments and accommodation.

Have you always wanted to test your limits - or even exceed them? This tour is very easy and, above all, safe. There is hardly any other area that is so shaped by the border at that time as the Schönseer Land. Where the border was at that time can hardly be distinguished nowadays whether the path is already in the neighboring country Czech Republic or if you are still in the Upper Palatinate Forest. With this recommendation - perfectly suitable for all cross-border commuters - it is guaranteed to be forested and promising in very special places. Because at Sautreibergasse, at the Šumava lookout tower, at the Reichenstein castle ruins or at the Hochfels natural monument, you can enjoy great views - often even deep into the Šumava.By the way: you can also find this tour in the Oberpfälzer Wald nature navigation system oberpfaelzerwald.de/natur-navi with lots of additional information from natural knowledge to refreshments and accommodation.
