Powerful, mystical and with a fantastic view – the Kandel is a very special Black Forest mountain. The witches were supposed to have danced on the 4.071-feet-high summit, today the Kandel is popular with outdoor athletes and nature lovers. In this collection, you will get to know Kandel intensively on your five-day tour: You will approach the Renchtal valley, get denser on picturesque Black Forest heights, then wander over the back of the exposed mountain and finally into relaxed Freiburg im Breisgau. You do almost 70 miles (110 kilometers) and over 10.830 feet (about 3.300 meters) elevantion in the five stages on the Kandelhöhenweg back – a wonderful hike with lots of nature and hiking enjoyment.
In 1935, the varied trail was created by the Black Forest Club. The goal: to make the Kandel and the Black Forest heights, which are still west than the popular Westweg, make known. The track is consistently signposted, just follow the red diamond with the white „K“. At the respective endpoints of the stages you will find opportunities to stop in and stay. In the high season, it is worth reserving in advance. On your tours, you can fortify yourself in rustic huts with regional dishes, or you can provide yourself in the villages with their own food and look for the best places to eat. Every now and then you come to sources, where you can fill up your drinking bottle with fresh Black Forest water.
Whether you run the route from North to South, or rather the other way around, as suggested in this collection, does not matter. You can reach Oberkirch from Offenburg by train, in Freiburg you have access to the long-distance traffic from the main station. If you are five days too long, you can easily shorten the hike or divide it into day trips. In Gengenbach and Waldkirch you will find train stations, from Höhenhäuser the bus will take you to the next train connection.

Start your multi-day hike on the Kandelhöhenweg in Oberkirch. With the Ortenau S-Bahn you come in 15 minutes from Offenburg to the starting point. The first stage has a good 26 kilometers in itself, but you will be rewarded with beautiful views over the Black Forest and the Rhine plain - the perfect start.From Oberkirch, it is only relaxed uphill, on the way you come again and again at cozy pause places over. The last piece on the moss head will make you sweat again, but once you have reached the top you have already made the challenging part of the day and can be proud of more than 700 meters of altitude difference. From the observation tower offers you a fabulous panorama into the Renchtal and up to the Vosges.The path leads you downhill through an idyllic landscape, on the way you can have a coffee break at the Naturfreundehaus on the Kornebene. You continue to hike downhill and have soon reached your today's destination Gegenbach in Kinzigtal. At the end of the day, you have earned yourself a typical Flammkuchen in a restaurant in the picturesque old town.In Gengenbach you have a good choice of accommodation. If you have only scheduled a day hike, you will come back from the train station back to Offenburg.
The second stage of the Kandelhöhenweg takes you further and further into the typical idyll of the Black Forest. You walk along lush meadows and enjoy great views over the mountainous landscape between Gengenbach and Höhenhäuser. With a good 28 kilometers, the tour is not without, but on the way you expect several quaint Refreshments to recharge your batteries.You wander out of Gengenbach, cross the Kinzig and begin the ascent. You wander over the bush to the Bremersbacher Bildstöckle and past the Steinfürstbrunnen. Not much longer, then you have reached the Guttahütte - time for a break promising.With fresh energy, it goes on in a relaxed up and down. Even from a distance, you can see the castle ruin Hohengeroldseck on the Seelbacher Schönberg thrones. How about a short trip to the Middle Ages? Information boards tell you more about the history of the castle.So slowly is the hunger noticeable? Not far, then you reach the Sodhof, where you can enjoy hearty, regional delicacies. That gives energy for the last ten kilometers. Shortly before the stage destination you will pass the Lahrer hut. You can stay there on the weekends. The third stage on the Kandelhöhenweg is relaxed with almost 23 kilometers and less than 300 meters altitude - so you can fully enjoy the fantastic views of the Black Forest. From Höhenhäuser you continue for the first ten kilometers at altitude.You always come back to beautiful rest areas with impressive views. In the distance you can see the Black Forest peaks, Feldberg, Schauinsland and of course the Kandel. About halfway you reach the inn "Zum Gscheid". Here you can enjoy the excellent Baden cuisine at Brägeli and Bibiliskäs.The path leads you downhill to the Elztal - including further great views towards Kandel. Soon you have reached your today's destination Waldkirch. From the castle ruin that towers over the city, you have a great view of Waldkirch. The city is known for its organ builders. Four workshops are still active in the craft. If you want to know more about it, then you should visit the Elztalmuseum.
Today's stage takes you high out to the 1,241-meter-high summit of the Kandel. It is considered a local mountain of Waldkirch, your starting point for the almost 18-kilometer hike. Well rested, you start the climb, a total of 1,000 meters in altitude to master.Gradually you leave the Elz Valley and walk up higher and higher. During your breather, you'll already get a taste of the fantastic views that await you from the summit. Not for nothing the Kandel is also referred to as a prince among the Black Forest mountains.At the top of the summit you have earned yourself a long break. What a panorama! In good weather you can look over the Rhine plain to France. If you do not have your own snack, you can eat at the Berggasthaus Kandelhof.Continue gently downhill towards St. Peter. On the way you continue to enjoy the beautiful view of the surrounding Black Forest mountains towards Breisgau and Hochschwarzwald. The stage ends at the campsite in St. Peter. In the village you will find several inns for dinner and overnight. Before that, you can still look at the imposing monastery church in the village.
The fifth stage of the Kandelhöhenweg is the shortest at 18 kilometers. In addition, you have only a few vertical meters in front of you, look forward to a relaxing hiking day with lots of views.You start in St. Peter and continue hiking on relaxed forest and dirt roads at the height. At the beginning you will always enjoy great views of the Breisgau and the Black Forest, before you wander deeper into the forest. After about ten kilometers, you will reach the Streckereck, where a beautiful panorama opens up to you. A great place for a break.You continue hiking until you are three kilometers ahead of the lookout tower on the Rosskopf. From the 736 meter high summit, which you can always see very well at the four wind turbines, you have a magnificent panoramic view of the Black Forest, Freiburg and the Kaiserstuhl.From now on, you walk down to Freiburg im Breisgau on a direct route. Soon you have reached the Freiburg Schlossberg and look from Kanonenplatz to the old town of the Baden city with its cathedral. Before you descend the last few meters, you can with good weather in Kastaniengarten, one of the most beautiful beer gardens in southern Baden, toast with a refreshing drink to more than 110 kilometers covered.Not far from the old town you will find the Freiburg train station.
