Powerful, mystical and with a fantastic view – the Kandel is a very special Black Forest mountain. The witches were supposed to have danced on the 4.071-feet-high summit, today the Kandel is popular with outdoor athletes and nature lovers. In this collection, you will get to know Kandel intensively on your five-day tour: You will approach the Renchtal valley, get denser on picturesque Black Forest heights, then wander over the back of the exposed mountain and finally into relaxed Freiburg im Breisgau. You do almost 70 miles (110 kilometers) and over 10.830 feet (about 3.300 meters) elevantion in the five stages on the Kandelhöhenweg back – a wonderful hike with lots of nature and hiking enjoyment.
In 1935, the varied trail was created by the Black Forest Club. The goal: to make the Kandel and the Black Forest heights, which are still west than the popular Westweg, make known. The track is consistently signposted, just follow the red diamond with the white „K“. At the respective endpoints of the stages you will find opportunities to stop in and stay. In the high season, it is worth reserving in advance. On your tours, you can fortify yourself in rustic huts with regional dishes, or you can provide yourself in the villages with their own food and look for the best places to eat. Every now and then you come to sources, where you can fill up your drinking bottle with fresh Black Forest water.
Whether you run the route from North to South, or rather the other way around, as suggested in this collection, does not matter. You can reach Oberkirch from Offenburg by train, in Freiburg you have access to the long-distance traffic from the main station. If you are five days too long, you can easily shorten the hike or divide it into day trips. In Gengenbach and Waldkirch you will find train stations, from Höhenhäuser the bus will take you to the next train connection.
Look forward to five days of pure Black Forest enjoyment, idyllic towns, picturesque river valleys and unique views, because the name Höhenweg is the program.
