Pack your camera – 5 epic hikes along the Pillersee Valley in Austria

On the five hikes in this Collection, you will constantly reach for your camera as you visit the most breathtaking places in the Kitzbuhel Alps in Austria. You will hike to magical places and vantage points where it is impossible not to take a photo. Years later, your snapshots will bring these wonderful moments back to life.

In this Collection, five day routes of varying degrees of difficulty around the Pillersee Valley and the Kitzbuhel Alps await. Some of the hikes can be extended into a two-day adventure by spending the night in a mountain hut. For example, the route to Wildseeloder Lake offers you countless photo opportunities as you hike from Fieberbrunn to the Wildseeloder Hut. You trace the edge of the magnificent lake before summiting Wildseeloder and marveling at the view from the top. The second route also explores the area around the Wildseeloder Lake as you climb the Marokka summit (using fixed ropes) once again enjoying panoramic views. The third route, an easy ascent to Jacob’s Cross on the Buchensteinwand, is suitable for the whole family. If high mountains are your thing, then the fourth hike is for you. From the Spielberghorn summit at 6,700 feet (2,044), you will be surrounded by the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberg, the Wilder Kaiser and the Berchtesgadener Alps. The fifth hike takes you to the Steinplatten summit and unique viewing platforms.

There is something for every kind of hiker and budding photographer in this Collection. We recommend wearing suitable footwear for all hikes. In addition, you need a helmet and harness for the fixed ropes on Tour two. You can find more information on how to reach the hikes with public transport in the stage descriptions. If you have a Gästekarte (Guest Card), you can take the hiking buses in the region for free. So, pack your camera and get ready to make unforgettable memories.

A mountain idyll like in a picture book awaits you at Wildseelodersee, one of the landmarks of the PillerseeTal. Almost kitschy when the Wildseeloderhaus and the surrounding peaks are reflected in the clear water. The hike rich in highlights starts in Fieberbrunn, which you can also reach by train. From there it goes to Lauchsee with its two islands and further up to the picturesque Streuboden Alm. Small hikers can expect a spacious playground and large hikers can make themselves comfortable in the deck chairs. Via colorful alpine meadows you hike uphill to the Wildalpgatterl and follow the cable car up to the Lärchfilzkogel. If you want to shorten the tour, you can take the cable car up to the summit.Via the Kuwait Valley you come to the Wildalm, another quaint refreshment stop that supplies you with homemade cheese. From the Wildalm, the path winds up to the wonderful Wildseeloder lake and the Wildseeloderhaus. Either you strengthen yourself before climbing the Wildseeloder or you tackle the promising summit directly. It goes up a steep slope and along the lake wall to the Törl. With every step the view of the lake gets better. Through the notch and over a green ridge you reach the summit cross of the Wildseeloder, which is at 2,119 meters. A particularly epic experience is the morning view of the deserted lake after an overnight stay in the Wildseeloderhaus. Alternatively, you can hike back to the mountain station on Lärchfilzkogel and take the gondola back down to the valley.

Since its establishment in 2014, it has been one of the most photographed motifs in the region: the impressive Jakobskreuz. 30 meters high and accessible - an epic spot. You start in St. Jakob in Haus, which you can reach with bus line 8302, and follow the Anzentalbach. Your gaze wanders over the gentle alpine meadows of the Pillersee valley while you hike on forest paths towards Fieberbrunn. At the next junction, keep left and climb in the shady forest over the Katzeneck to the Buchensteinwand. At the summit cross the rock face drops vertically and you can expect a fantastic view of the PillerseeTal and the Jakobskreuz. Only a few minutes later you will reach the unique building. If you want to go even higher, climb the roof of the Jakobskreuz and enjoy a 360-degree panorama. In the adjoining Alpengasthof you can fortify yourself. There is a spot near the cross that will draw another astonishment to your face: To do this, you hike about ten minutes west on the panorama path towards the reservoir. This photo spot offers an unforgettable experience, especially at sunset, when the Jakobskreuz and the beautiful mountain landscape begin to glow in the sunset. You can go back the same way or take the cable car down to the valley.

After four kilometers, the rows of trees clear up and give a view of an idyllic alpine pasture. The beautiful garden of the Burgeralm inn invites you to rest and refresh yourself. The path then becomes steeper and you climb up to the Spielbergtörl. You can already enjoy fantastic views here, but it gets even better.A promising ridge leads to the summit of the Spielberghorn, the highlight of this hike.
